Need help on 1991 22re
I rebuild my 91 22re top and bottom two years ago and ran decent. Weather got cold and I started my truck ran find. It got hot after a few minutes, so I turned it off. Radiator was empty. I figured the head gasket went bad, but was out of town and didn't want to tear apart there. I have taken the intake apart and found nothing.
I really don't want to tear off the head. Does anyone know what I can check before I do that.

i would have filled the rad back up and looked for external leaks.
if you cant find any external leaks, then chances are its a hg problem.
but i would fill her up, and run it for a while and try to find out where the coolant is going.

Yeah, I can't imagine all of the fluid evaporating through the HG over 2 years. More likely external leak in the radiator. Like toyota 1 said, fill it up then start to diagnose.

I did that for five days and trying liquid gasket sealer. I couldn't find a external leak. I did a compression test and all for between 145-150. I checked exsaust side of head for crack in ports, but none that i could see. Checked for cracks and the plane of the intake manifolds and throttle body, but still good. Can a head gasket still hold compression and leak water into cylinder? Is ther a good brand of gasket i should use?

more than likely a bad hg wouldn't show up with just a normal compression test. unless it was REAL bad.
sounds like a bad head gasket.
is there obvious white smoke coming out the exhaust?
how fast are you using coolant?
any coolant in the oil? or oil in the coolant?

yea id say its hg time...
make sure to get that head checked out by a machine shop before reinstalling it.
p.s what do you mean by 10min? do you loose all you coolant in 10 min? or it only smokes for 10 min?

I wouldn't dive straight at the head gasket yet.
It's possible for compression to be normal and still have a head gasket leak. But, did you look for bubbles in the radiator with the engine running?
Normal condensation in the exhaust can cause steam for a few minutes as the engine warms up. But since the exhaust does have a sweet smell, fill the coolant and get the cooling system pressure tested and look for leaks up into throttle body from the idle air valve / auxillary air control valve and if possible have the cylinders looked in with a flexible scope for evidence of coolant. Also you could do a leak down test- pressurize the cylinders one at a time and look for bubbles in the radiator.

Well I tore it down to the block! Seen white power around a head bolt hole. Head and block not warped! Thank the toyota gods! I have it olmost done. I just need a little help with the vacuum lines. I have three vacuum switches on the valve cover. Does any body know where the vacuum lines connect to? I searched but the diagrams I found only have two switches. If any body has pics would help alot. Thanks!

I have put the engine back together. But i'm having some problems with it running. When cold it stalls at 2000 rpm in all gears. What could cause this th happen? I'm going to check timing with light and valve clearance. Any help or ideas please!
