Might be a heater for those who live in really cold conditions. If that is the case its there to keep the water from freezing and the oil from getting to thick.

Its for a factory trouble light. Its a 110 plug, but only the trouble light will plug into it.

My 89 4runner has the same thing.

Here is a pic:

The light is supposed to have a cover over it, but the PO lost it.

2nd gens didn't have that option. Course, they also had more overhead lighting, but the length of the cord is nice since it can reach to the engine bay.

Yes, FSM refers to it as inspection light so it was meant for looking under the hood, etc.

You lucky you! I believe they came with SR5's. 1986 4Runner FSM shows it as but my 1986 4Runner DLX does not have it. Handy to have, but it would be nice to replace that bulb with ultra-bright LED's for more light and durability.

I love what you do for me, Toyota.

I wish my 4runner came factory with one! Maybe time for some modding...

I found an inspection light in a Jxxp at pick and pull about a year ago. It has ford markings, but it has around twenty feet of self retracting wire and a magnet on the end, so your light stays put. It grounds to the body and has a hot line to the battery. I rand a 10 amp fuse and a switch under the hood. Definately worth five bucks.
