infiltrator I am truly sorry for you and your awesome 2nd gen. you will pull through this, and definitely get a medical check up right away (I mean tomorrow first thing!)- you may get a lot more settlement from the insurance company which may help you get your runner fixed or replaced soon.

when I say 'replaced' I know nothing can ever replace your 4runner if you decide to get a new one...
but this might be a real chance for you to upgrade to a 3rd gen which is just as clean.

also if it's not too inappropriate I'd like to ask a question to everybody- about whether having a rear replacement 2nd gen bumper (like a marlin or a BCC) would have stopped this problem and rear-end damage in general.

I am in the same boat- I have no rear bumper on my 2nd gen...and maybe your experience infiltrator can inspire us all to replace all our rear bumpers pronto. I feel for you man, we're all hoping your neck is OK and you get a HUGE settlement to either rebuild or replace your runner fast.
good luck!

sorry to hear about that man....my 1st 2nd gen i owned was totaled by a nissan...now i have another and it's 10x better! hope you're ok too. And taikowaza, i think a marlin or another kind of heavy duty bumper would have helped with the damage but there would still be some coming from that truck, a smaller car, however, it would hold up really well.

I have the Allpro bumper which is similar in design to the Marlin....For a corner impact like that the Marlin bumper would still need some additional bracing from the corner area to the frame.

Well, got back from the hospital and here's the news. I have a compact fracture in my back, and I am on a neck brace until further instruction. I can't move my neck more than an inch without severe pain. That's why I am on Vicodin.

About the truck, well that comes today. My mom suggersted we go with another body shop and they are going to pick up my truck probably later today. Then I will get it in to this bodyshop guy and I will get the news. If he can't fix the back, I will tell him to do something radical but cool to make it into a trail rig if possible. Cut off the back, chop and bob, something... As long as the frame is straight. That is number one.

The 4runner bumper I must say is really strong. It took the majority of the hit, and is into my tire. I tried to move it out after the accident, but it wouldn't budge. My trailer hitch shredded my bumper though, as it was flattened.

His truck had the 22re I believe from what I could see through the messed up hood. He drove it out of that accident, still running. I was pretty surprised, but then again its a Yota...

bad break bro, un-welcome to the club

on may 15 i too was rear ended by a s10 extended. mine was not as damaged as yours, but again a low km well maintained 4 runner. about 3500 to fix. i was lucky the s10 went under so much. people who don't pay attention driving must be made to pay. my wife and i are sore. i was in a head on in 2000 and i never fully recovered from pain and now, well not a happy camper. not looking forward to all that physio again. i feel for you.
funny enough, my rental is a brand new (1200 km) jeep liberty northern. had it for a week and i'm already bored of it. solid plastic and no truck like ride or feel.
hope for the best...

Sorry about your problem & injuries. I hope the frame is straight & you can make a trail rig out of it if that's what you want to do. I almost got rear-ended by a Mustang yesterday myself; it was going about 50-60mph & I was at a dead stop with my foot on the brake & a vehicle about 2 feet in front of me & a light pole to my right. I saw him coming in the rear view when he whipped out from the fast lane traffic to pass on the left & the idiot was looking down at his dash when he did it. Lucky for me he saw me in a knick of time & yanked it back into the fast lane. He broke traction doing it but didn't wipe out or hit anyone else thank god. I had my two daughters in the truck too; if he'd hit me & killed my little girl I'd have blown his brains out if I was conscious & mobile.

ummmm vicodin... the good stuff... be careful with that it's very easy to get hooked on that junk... sorry to hear about your back/neck take it real easy and when they put you on physio do what they tell you and you might have a chance to get your back/neck back to something approaching 100%...

There are a few members here who have done some really great rear bobs take a look at them for some ideas.

Yeah those 1/2gen toyota bumpers are really solid. They can take a hit like no ones business.

Yeah his is probably repairable... looks like it is all cosmetic damage to him, new fender/hood/rad mount/grill/bumper and he should be good to go...
Hope everything works out for you in the end bud... just remember you walked [hobbled] away from this one so it all good no matter what else happens.

Very true. Aint no worldly item worth your life.

And watch your Vicodin intake. That hydrocodone is one addictive substance! Speaking of which I need to go fill my prescription

Hey man. I've read alot of your posts, and I'm really sorry to hear about the accident. Definitely go after a settlement (don't settle for too little!) and keep positive about everything. It could have been worse...

On another note: I know I'm across the country and everything, but I just found an '88 4Runner for sale...165K miles, beautiful, the guy wants $800. You'll find something you'll love just as much as that beautiful truck you had.

So she will ride again as a trail rig? Even if the frame is bent I believe that you can get it straightened out. If so, make a truggy out of it! A 2nd gen truggy would look awesome, kind of like this one on the left:

Yeah, don't wait, I was just saying, if you just had a soft tissue injury it'd be fine in a few weeks.

Sorry to hear it's a fracture...

I wanted my 4runner to someday be a trail rig, but for now while I was driving it daily, I wanted it to be slick and shiney...
I can't imagine life without my 4runner. It never gave me problems, always started up. Headgaskets never failed on me, and all it did was leak oil ever little bit...

Sad to see in 14 years of this trucks life to end in such a horrible way.

My neck is getting extremely stiff. I am going to get it checked out in a couple hours.

The guy was going about 40mph when he hit me. The speed limit for that street is about 45-50mph zone..

Make sure you have all of the receipts for recent work/parts you added to the 4Runner. My wife had an 88 Honda Civic that was totalled. I had just rebuilt the engine, replaced carpet, etc.. They only wanted to give us $500 for the car because it had 250,000 miles on it. I gave them the receipts along with pics of the car and bargained them up to $1500. I know your 4Runner is worth a lot more but be prepared to prove that it's not a 14 year old Piece of Crap so they don't low-ball you on the price.

P.S. ---> I hope you feel better. The 4Runner may be down for a while but we need you up and running.
