My Transmission is going out

My truck pops out of 1st and 3rd gear, and it has been doing this in first since I bought the truck, but recently it has started popping out of third. Its not the bushing, it just pops out too hard, sometimes it hurts my hand! It will grind if you dont put the shifter in the right place in third gear, then you have to hold it to keep it from popping out!

I was just wondering, how much would a place charge to install a new transmission? I would replace the clutch at the same time, since the trans will already be out.

My question is, what would be a rough estimate for a new transmission, clutch and installation. I would do it myself, but I do not have the right tools.

I've been having the same problem with my reverse gear. It just pops right back to my hand/neutral. It also slips out of 1st. I think I'm going to change the tranny fluid before I start thinking extremely expensive (new tranny). Though my clutch is starting to slip :-/

Search for "shift seat bushing"

Something like $20 fix - beats the hell out of a tranny replacement

He said he knows is isnt the shifter bushing because of how hard it pops.

My 88 did the same thing. It will just get louder and louder. When I pulled it out the input bearing had about 4 ball bearings left in it. This is the other Toyota downfall of these trucks, the input bearing. Once it goes it puts presure on the driven shaft and starts popping out of gear. Your best bet would be to get a used one that does not have much endpay in the input shaft. Then get the shop that is going to put it in for you to replace the input bearing. Run synthetic fluid in it when you are done.

As for cost, I would think that if you find the tranny, they could put it in for $400 plus clutch.

For my 1990 truck, same thing. I went and bought a rebuilt tranny for 600 bucks with a 2 year warranty and also replaced the clutch. I did all the work myself and it saved me a hell of alot of money. Just my 2 cents worth.

Pretty sure it would be a heck of a lot cheaper to buy all the tools you need than pay somebody to do it. Plus you'll have tools for the next project.

We dont really have a good selection of parts/tools carriers here. I dont know for sure that it is the bushing, and I really want to think it is the bushing, it just doesnt seem right, you know? It seems like that such a small thing, that it doesnt have that much effect you know. I am going to replace it and see if that is the problem, but I seriously doubt that it is. I mean, it actually hurts my hand when it pops out of first, and now not being able to shift into third without grinding the gears its really hard to drive, you have to hold the shifter the whole time too!! Its really annoying.

By the way, If I do get a new transmission, I will be replacing the clutch too, so thats one less thing to go wrong!

Who makes a good new/rebuild transmission, or would it be better to rebuild my current transmission. Which would be more cost effective?

When mine went out early this year, I got quotes from $900-1800 to rebuild it depending on what was wrong with it inside. I ended up getting one from the junkyard for $800 and paying a shop $250 to swap it out for me...

Mine ran out of oil. Do yourself a favor and make sure yours is full right away.

Okay, I found the last straw. My truck would not shift into 3rd gear at all anymore. IF you let off the clutch and the shifter was in third gear all you would get is grinding.

I took it to the shop, they took the transmission out and sent it off to be rebuilt. The guy at the transmission shop said that the syncros were shot, so we just decided to rebuild the whole thing.

The final cost was $995, including the removal and reinstall of trans, new clutch, pressure plate, and throughout bearing, resurfacing the flywheel, and install new catalytic converter i had (which didnt fix the problem i thought was caused by faulty cat).

I will tell you something, it is like driving a new truck. I didnt realize my clutch and everything were that bad. I almost killed it pulling it out of the shop, because shifting and clutching were so different. Now I dont have to hold the shifter in 1st. Now I can actually spend money on modifications now....
