My RECALL Date is set......

OK, I'm going to be taking my 95 4 runner 4x4 in for the SSC 50N (STEERING RELAY ROD REPLACEMENT) on Monday. Any thing I should look out for or ask them at the dealership? I don't want to get ripped off as I don't no to much about this, so your input would be great. Please post your input on this.

Thank you all.

You should get all new tie rod ends for free as well. Mine went smoothly because my girlfriends cousin did it for me at the dealership he works at.

The tie rods are included in the recall. The guy who did mine told me that they were included. It got a full alignment as well.

I DID NOT GET THE TIE RODS DONE BECAUSE THEY SAID IT WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL WITHOUT A PERSONS NAME AND EXTENTION FROM TOYOTA OF AMERICA.

SO I WOULD SAY CALL TOYOTA OF AMERICA TALK TO SOMEONE ABOUT THE RECALL GET THERE NAME AND EXTENTION ASK WHAT IS EXACTILY COVERED AND IF THEY SAY TIE RODS ARE COVERED MAKE SURE YOU LET THE PERSON AT TOYOTA KNOW WHEN AND WHERE YOU APPOINTMENT IS.

HAVE THEM CALL THE DEALER AND SPEAK WITH THE SERVICE MANAGER TO CONFIRM THEY ARE TO BE REPLACED OR YOU MAY END UP GOING BACK AFTER GOING THRU THE STEPS ABOVE LIKE ME.

I WAS TOLD THE COST OF BOTH INNER AND OUTER TIE RODS IS 240 AND THEN THERES LABOR TO INSTALL THEM PLUS THE ALIGNMENT SO FOR YOUR OWN SAKE DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND GET IT ALL UNDER THE RECALL.

The dealership I took mine to said there was no need for an alignment after the recall was done. When I called back the next day after I noticed the truck pulling to the right more they told me it wasn't anything they did because nothing they did would affect the alignment.

My buddy who is a mechanic at a Toyota dealership told me the tie rods were part of it and he got me free tie rods when he did my 50N for me at his dealership. Maybe not every dealer is aware of the full extent of the recall. Who knows....

Just got mine done a lil while ago. They did the relay rod plus the tie rods and new stabilizer.

I did the drop off window and I put on the sheet. "Here for the recall work. Thats all I wish to get done at this time". Next day, all I heard was your truck is ready. LOL

I picked mine up the next day only to find it drove dangerously WORSE--took it back to the tech who did it, took him for a ride and he admitted that he should have test driven it when he was done. They looked it over 'for free' and determined that my stabilizer had 'reached its mechanical limits'. They offered to put a new one on for free if I paid for the new one (150ish) but I argued that it was working great BEFORE I brought it in, yada yada yada I ended up buying an aftermarket one for 50ish and put it on myself. BTW, never thought about the re-alignment! Should've tried it.

the tie rods **can** be replaced during the recall but they are not a required item. you are supposed to **inspect the tie rod ends for wear**. toyota is replacing the drag link (relay rod) and if they reposition a worn tie rod end it can be weakened and fail. you guys are just gonna have to trust me on this. it WILL happen. if you remove and reinstall a tie rod or ball joint connection of any kind and it is not in good condition **tight** YOU NEED TO REPLACE THAT WORN PART. it really might pop in two during suspension movement or steering motion. that is the reason toyota will replace them. lawsuit city. now.. if you have a tech that you know that can **inspect them for wear** with you in mind, he will replace all of them that he can. this job pays 3.7 hours in it's most basic form, where you replace only the drag link (relay rod). **this is way above avarage for a recall and can be done in way less time**. making it a **gravy** job. i would say that if your joints show any signs of wear they probly will be replaced. replacing tie rod ends just makes it pay more. the tech does not hate getting this particular recall (most of them suck!!!) but you should definetly get an alignment printout. i wouldn't leave without it. as for the ball joint and fighting with the service guys, i wouldn't worry about it. they aren't hard or expensive to replace on your own anyway, and theres no reason for a tech to slack on them. recalls like this make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
