Are my hubs not disengaging?

Hey guys/girls, need some help. Yesterday left for work in the snow and used 4 wheel drive to get out of my driveway. Stopped at the store, COFFEE. When I backed out, my 88 4runner 3.0 4x4 was hopping and banging. I need to do A frame repair at the rear shackle mount, so I thought it finally let go. not the case. It almost felt like I had 2 flat tires. I couldnt find anything definitively broken, and it seems to have righted it self. Could this be the auto hubs not disengaging, and if so why?

Auto hubs DISENGAGE in reverse i.e. "backing out"

shift on the fly. I usually do back up to make sure the hubs disengage. I didnt this time, until I backed out of the store. Really felt like I had 2 flat tires, or a broken axle. Now it seems fine. It does slam into 4 wheel drive though.

Auto hubs were an option in that time-frame. Depending on how bound up the drive train is, they may or may not release the same all the time, so you may just have had things bound up too tight and they needed reverse to release.

Otherwise, might need to re-build them:

Or replace them w/ manual hubs:

Wabbit and 4crawler, thanks for the links and info. Auto hubs for sure, and will be replacing them with manual aisins. still my question remains, could the hubs cause the symptoms described, or should i be looking at something else? searched past posts and couldnt find anything similar.

Sounds like they were simply not unlocking automatically and you needed the reversing to make that happen. Sounds like somewhat "normal" erratic operation which is what prompts most folks with auto hubs to swap over the manual. Sometimes they won't lock when you want them to or they won't unlock when you want them to.

This would feel like 2 flat tires?

It could I imagine. Never driven with auto hubs, but have had manual hubs locked on dry pavement. First time it happened w/o knowing was driving in a snow storm then pulled into a parking garage and thought I had shifted into 2H, but was still in 4H. Felt a little strange driving around on the dry concrete and then there was a big bang and I guess one tire had rolled over a large pebble on the pavement and that was shot out like a bullet from the bound up tension in the drive train. Then realized I was in 4H and shifted to 2H and all was fine.
