**%&!!!! my headgasket blew AGAIN!!! advice on rebuild?

JIMINY CHRISTMAS! i fixed the HG before, and it was fine. i JUST spent 1400 bucks to get a rebuilt tranny and clutch. was running BEAUTIFULLY. then suddenly at a light the engine stumbles and then starts idling around 300rpms. i pump the gas, and notice i smell coolant. so i get home with the engine chugging and spitting. i turn it off and i can REALLY smell coolant. i let it sit awhile so i could return my grandfathers lawnmower, (used my dads ranger) . then came back and started it so i could try and see if a hose sprung a leak. turns out the coolant is leaking out of the exhaust manifold seal (presumably where the exhaust leak is) and mist is coming out of the exhaust. i rev it, and in a few seconds am facing a solid WALL of white. i started yelling some very colorful stuff. so, im back in the expedition... again... let the gas suckin begin... i need this done QUICK, as gas prices are climbing again...
im getting the engine rebuilt, what are some parts that i should put in it? i want to put the same cam that allan (just a 22re) has in his truck, but i cant remember which one it is, just that its from engnbldr. can you buy stuff in singles from him? and if i do, should i get the RV head, or just reuse the stock head, if its rebuildable? and if i get the cam/head, what are some mods i will have to have done? stronger cam springs, etc? i need a list of stuff. thanks guys

that look like chocolate milk to you guys? and the oil is at a perfect level, it just looks low cuz im on a hill

heres a video of the mist

Adding to 904runner, make sure they(or you) check the timing chain cover aswell.

Mine blew in cyl. 4, the headgasket was allright when we pulled it, but the head was warped and the timing chain had wore through where the water pump sits, adding to the dammage.

Have your head checked out before buying a new one though.

Sorry i don't know much especially about the 4cyls. I haven't had to deal with it, thankfully.
(knock on Wood)

But i was told if the head gasket blew once then the block and heads should be resurfaced to make sure it is done properly. Also make sure you use a good head gasket aka TOYOTA. Where the head bolts torqued down in the proper sequence? proper torque? etc...

So you had a shop do it? how long ago?

I haven't heard about rv heads, i have heard about rv cams though.

no, a friend of my dads did it. replaced it, took it to a machine shop his buddy owns and they resurfaced it for free, then he cleaned up the top of the block, made it smooth, and reassembled it. ever since then the temp hasnt worked correctly. im sick of it, im just gonna get it rebuilt. it has 300,000 miles on it, and i figure might as well, doing the HG im halfway into a rebuild anyway.

Order the engn bldr kit. Machine work. Labor. You can rebuild one for under $1300 parts/labor...depending on how cheap you work for yourself.

I just experienced this on a 22RE I tried to "fix" instead of rebuild...cheaper to do it right the first time I seem to remember now.

the HG might be fine, the head may be cracked. I replaced my head with a stock one from engnbldr and the other yoter, the head cracked and they welded it. It blew a year or so ago, figured it was toast. year later tore into the motor, the head checked out fine, the felpro HG they used blew.

i rebuilt the motor, runs again.

anyway, get the head checked for a crack, or look for one. you could CLEARLY see it on my head. between the cylinder and water passage.

gluck

The last 22RE I rebuilt had corroded through the exhaust port roof to the water jacket on #4, I suspect from never changing the coolant. I used the EB street/rv head in the rebuild with great results.

I totally reccomend Rock brand headgasket (what engnbldr sells) .. or a stock one from the dealer (expensive id imagine).. But the one from Ted is tough. Felpro's HG's just suck.

I just put one in my truck and it is a top quality head gasket the one that was in the truck looked to be a felpro or some other cheap one compared to the Rock one.
