My first Toyota and first stick shift...

Hey all I got my self a nice deal on a 89 4x4 pickup with the 22re motor in it. Only prob was it was a stick shift. So I have had to teach my self how to drive one. I have been driving automatic V8 vehicles for all my life so its been a little challenging getting used it it but I am doing pretty good now.

Now to my question..

Is it normal for these little trucks to have a very low 1st gear?

I am having to shift to 2nd before I am halfway through an intersection. After I have gone about a truck length the rpm is starting to sound pretty high so I have to shift. I don't have a tach in it so I dont know the rpms. The truck has 31 10.5 15 tires on it. Is it possible somebody may of put a lower gear in it? I have contemplated taking off in 2nd but I am not sure that would be good for the clutch?

Yeah, first is pretty low, but it won't hurt it to run it up a little before ya shift. Mine is the same, but smaller tires. Search through the gear/regear threads to find out how to check your gear ratios. The door tag will tell you what the stock ratio is/was, but won't be accurate if someone regeared it. There's tons of threads chock full of gear info. Check the stickys in the newb tech section, good stuff there, too.

Someone probably added those 31's (265/75's) after the fact, so more than likely you have 4.10's in yer diffs. I don't know for sure but just making an educated guess. You would have to slip the clutch pretty bad to get it moving and not stall out with the bigger tires. I have 235/75's which are one size bigger than what came on stock (225/75's). For me to start in 2nd, I have to slip the clutch pretty good (I tried once, I was curious). Start in 1st and save your clutch. Once you are good with the manual, they are fun to drive....

These trucks are the most forgiving for stick-shift learning. Dunno about the 22re, but the 3vze with towing package is pretty dang hard to stall in normal driving. EDIT: It's also nice that the stock clutch is quite robust. They will take lots of abuse and give you lots of warning when they start to go. Pretty easy to change, even for a newb like myself!

Keep on top of your oil levels and changes... and you can rev the piss out of these little japanese blocks. You kinda have to for more fun... but they don't mind in the slightest. I have to laugh at my buddy's 2008 Ford Ranger. At 3k rpm, sounds like it's going to fall apart. My 93 V6? Redline and back no problems everyday, with 254k km on it.

Be prepared to empty out your wallet... not that you'll have to, but you'll want to.

Welcome to yotatech!

Awesome, I suppose work first gear like they are saying and check your ratio. Like yourself, I JUST purchased a truck. I bought a '90 toyota pickup 4x4. It was a steal/essentially a gift. The guy didn't want to put any work into it and it was sittin in his driveway and I asked him if he'd sell it. It needed a fuel pump . Anyway, I have been looking for a good ol' yo truck for some time now but I finally have it. Do you hunt with a longbow? I have a mathews longbow, its unreal but I do not hunt with it, I use a Martin Hatfield takedown recurve. Anyway, I look forward to seeing some pics and I will post mine in a separate thread when I find the time. Good luck with the truck

Is it just me or does the above post sound like spam? Seems like I've been seeing this a lot more recently...

Well I am kind of getting used to the truck and shifting now but still its hard to get used to every soccer mom and grandma passing you when you take off. It seems the only vehicles on the street that I can challenge is a fully loaded tractor trailer LOL.

The speedo is off 10-15 mph and the sticker says it came with 4:10 gears. I am currently researching what it will take to do differential swap to 4:56 or 4:88 gears. Not sure if I will do it unless I can do it cheap since I only have 1700 in the truck to begin with.

ToyotaTrons I do indeed hunt with longbows and recurves and also shoot quite a bit of 3D competition with them!

The truck has a hard tonneau cover which is nice but kind of unhandy when I need to pickup something that wont fit under it. I think I will also look for a truck cap to fit it.

Is there any lists of compatible truck caps around here? I have been searching the net with not much luck.

Softopper will be cheapest, most versatile option, in my opinion. I have one and I love it.

Yeah those look nice! But at $600+ I cant afford something like that right now. I need the $100 craigslist solution lol. I see plenty of caps for sale for rangers and s-10 and dakotas and other small trucks but no toyotas right now. Guess I will just have to get a tape measure out and go look at some.
