5speeds+22REs

Here is my first mod thread, and my first mod really, besides a quick airbox elbow-tube removal. I read tons of threads on the subject (thanks everybody!) and decided to try a different coil. I went with the Black Magic's but instead got the 5" x 13" as my fully-drooped-leafs-to-frame measurement was 12.5" and I wanted to avoid removing bump stops, welding in mounts, etc. because, well I have no mechanical ability. But anyway I hoped from my measurements that 5" would allow for the springs to fit around the frame stop and the leaf spring brackets. It didn't quite work as planned but they're in and they are sweeet.

So here it is:
5" OD x 13" tall 100# Black Magic Coil Springs

Before w 13" rim to finder and not much visible sag

Stolen bottle jack idea, and coil pops in by hand!

Here you can see, how the spring actually sits on the brackets instead of around, but the they fit so snug around the top bump stop I think it will be fine.


15" for a total of 2" of lift, perfect for my limited use of the bed



Smoother ride and more tire to ground contact, accomplished, with no welding or cutting. After a few hops on the bumper, there is no settling noises from the springs either. So far I recommend this setup for cheap, easy, restoration of stock height. Southwest Speed definitely earned free advertising, the sticker is on the back window. I love my springs!!!

So what holding the coils to the leafs? Might want to get a factory bump stop to keep the bottoms in place.

X2 What's holding it in place. I fear you riding around and hitting a couple of speed bumps would make the bottom slip out of place.

ok Yes big disadvantage of the wider coils is how they sit ON the leaf not between or around. What if I streched/widened the last coil of the spring somehow.. And I don't think a factory bump stop will even make contact with the coil.. other ideas?

But also I don't think you guys realize how tight of a fit there is around that frame bump stop.. and I've driven it over a a conveniently large number of speed bumps today with no noise.
So I'm thinking it's like it's mounted to the frame and just guided by the leaf, and the bottom is squeezed around the brackets enough that it's secure too. Anyway it works yay!

I will see if I can get a look at how they situated themselves
