My '86 won't hardly Idle?

I let my son use my '86 Toy for a few months while I was working on his. I got it back and it won't hardly idle. When I asked him about it, he said " oh yeah, you have to turn on the air conditioner to make it idle." What do you do right? So here I am asking for ideas. It runs smooth, just won't hardly idle. It tries, but just barely. You turn on the A/C and the fan and it idles fine. What yall think?

Sorry, I guess knowing how it is fueled does matter. It is EFI. It was running great before he used it. And I am certain he didn't abuse it, that was my first concern but he knows what the truck means to me.

Look at the air intake where it comes together with the efi. Check to see if there's a rip in that soft rubber peice. When that piece ripped on mu moms it devoloped a idle prob... and no ˟˟˟˟, duct tape fixed it.

Reset the idle air screw 1 1/2 turns from lightly seated and go from there.

Look at the vacuum diagram under the hood and trace each and every hose for proper location and connection. If old replace them anyways.

If that don't fix it spray some kind if flammable aerosol like carb cleaner or even propane around the throttle body and intake plumbing, over all the vacuum hoses and around the brake booster.

Yeah, adjust idle speed screw. It's on the throttle body, facing towards the bumper on V6 or up on the 4-cylinder (you didn't say which engine).
