My 3vze is a dog, any ideas?

This is my first V6 toyota. It is a 93 4runner. 175k mi. I have heard that these motors werent too great but this thing sucks. It does also consume oil. My pickup had tons of power and it had a 22r (granted it was lighter). Anyway, just looking for suggestions on problems to look for or cheap mods available. Also, The oil consumption thing is wierd, it won't appear to consume oil for a week, then all of the sudden it is almost a quart down. I don't think the head gasket is currently a problem (dealer said it was replaced in the past ) because no mixing of oil and water noticed in either place.
Thanks,
J

if u want faster buy a car. if u want more mud, buy a tractor. otherwise i believe u should work with what u got. small mods for power and gearing, and some tires. some lift. u cant expect too much. lol.

ps. ferraris are fast

do you have the auto or 5spd? Also, it is in the manual that it will burn some oil.

My 3.0 was lousy too. Just run it into the ground and swap in a 3.4

Mine finally blew up at 384,000 kms (238,000 miles for you American folks).

Man, I like this board, you get comments fast.

I appreaciate all of the comments so far. I guess the general consensus is that its a dog. It is a manual tranny, why would that use more oil? I do have my eyes on a 93 Chevy 4.3. The head mechanic at the Toyota garage here said if it goes, that it would be a lot cheaper to put together and have more power with the 4.3. Our emissions here do not allow engine swaps from one model to another (which may mean i can't even do the 3.4) though which would say no to any motorswap. That would mean off road only or seasonal tags.
Thx,
J

Is it burning oil or leaking it?

I would suggest taking a closer look at your emisson regs. A 3.4 swap would mean a newer, cleaner, more efficient engine for your rig, and it would be Toyota truck to Toyota truck.

If the guys stuck in Kalifornistan can make it happen (with C.A.R.B. inspections, no less), then I would think that just about anyplace in the country could do it.

I finished mine last December, and the 3.4 is worlds better than the 3.0 ever thought of being!

Food for thought.

Burning or leaking? Oh and 1 more problem - the windows fog.

It must be burning, I see very little leakage. It has been so damn cold here since I bought it that I'm not really sure if it is smoking or if its just the cold.

1 more problem: The windows fog something horrible. It doesn't matter how long I drive it, the defrost will not keep the windows clear. I know that sounds like a leaky heater core, but I don't smell the sweet anti-freeze smell. There is exessive moisture on the floor but it is frozen on the drivers side, I think from snow that I drag in. If this was from the the heater core, it should not be frozen, eh.

Its common sense to fit headers, filter and intake mods, but make sure everything is in good nick,like-rotar button, dizzy cap, plugs, leads, fuel filter...

If it is VERY slow, i would do a comp test on the motor.

PS. I have done all of the mods/mantinance, advanced my dizzy a few degrees, and run 15/40 graid of oil in it and im am happy withs its power now, for a 2tonne 4wd anyway!

hey man; my 94 runner just puked a head gasket and to make things worse, Toyota informed me they already did the recall job so Im screwed! How big a job is the 3.4 swap? After 2 head gaskets and no power Im thinking the 3.4 would be a wise move. I love my rig but i don't have endless funds or a pit crew to keep flipping out head gaskets. any thoughts? THANX

AZTOAK: If the 3.0 has less power than your 22re, then it isn't running right. And the auto tranny makes any engine in a 4000 lb truck a DOG.

bryans runner: the first thing you need to do is start your own thread and stop hijacking AZTOAK's thread. There are a TON of threads here on engine swaps; try the search function, man!
