My 22re does not have the famous chatery idle...... :(
I kinda got a delima and am depressed. I have an 89 4runner 22re. I'm kinda depressed that my 22r does not have the notorious chatery idle. It is kinda almost smooth with a few other misc sounds. Dunno but i have tried messin with it to get to sound right. But no sucess..... Anyone? Tomarrow i'll prolly link a video of what mine sounds like later.

You are kidding, right?
22re's don't normally make a lot of noise- at least from the factory they didn't.
The engine I just put in my 91 pickup chirps the tires just fine and you only hear the injectors ticking at idle.

No its weird. It kinda weird. You have heard 22res run before haven't you? I've heard 100's and they all have a unique idle. They sound like they are knockin in a weird kinda way but they are not bad motor. Mine is sorta quite with a few vac leaks and a bunch of exhuast leaks i've yet to find. And yes i've heard some very smooth 22rs but 90% of them had chatery knocky idle.

I like the sound of my '93 more than my '88 because the valves tick like a clock I don't know why, but I, too, like the sound of the chattery 22res. My '88 is nice and quiet, apart from the exhaust leak right below the exhaust manifold and the moan of the PS pump.

My '93 has around 150K. my '88 has 206K
Really, every oil change? I didn't know that often. I thought it was like 15K miles or something... Hell, I adjusted the valve lash 4 times this past summer and couldn't get them to be quiet. Obviously there are more problems then just the lash, most likely the cam lobes and rockers are warn, but I even tried tighter. oh well. If it ain't tickin', it ain't runnin'

Simply.... WOW!!!! You won't adjust the valves?
Well there goes that extra little bit of performance proper valve timing can give.
And let's not forget how valve overlap can help prolong valve life and extend mileage.
Guess I belong in the stone age where people did things to help their situation instead of hindering it.
Oh wait... evolution favors innovation not hesitation.
...nevermind: same thing. Adapt or get left behind.

I don't know where this "every 3k mile" valve adjustment came from, but that isn't the recommendation. It's every 36 months/3yrs. Don't know about anyone else, but I certainly travel more than 3k miles in 3 years.
My valves are quiet.......and I like it.
Well, except when it's real cold on cold starts. But, so what.
