I am wanting open my exhaust a little bit but I don't really want to spend the money on a full cat-back. Has anyone just replaced the stock muffler with a more free flowing one. I was thinking of a long (30") cherry bomb. any opinions?

I also have a 3.0/5spd combo, my muffler and tailpipe were shot(factory originals from '93), so I bought a Flowmaster 40 series 2.5" muffler and had a muffler shop fab up a replacement tailpipe.
It sounds great, slightly improved my fuel mileage and power(no more downshifting just to get up hills), definitely recommend this upgrade!

can you weld personaly? you could add a cherry bomb if you want to completly open it up for your top end or if you want a bit of back pressure for the low end starts i recomend a flowmaster. its a bit more in price but not much. do it yourself its real easy if you can.

i just replaced mine from the cat back with 2.5 tubing from the parts store and a dynomax muffler. total cost 65 bucks

i was thinking of going with a vortex muffler, about how much does a shop cost to weld it on?

i got a flowmaster cat back a long time ago it was about 400 or so its not worth it imo. you can save a tone if you build it. or get a buddy a case of beer to do it lol

Depends on how you view your ride.
I had a muffler shop do mine because I had them reuse the hangers (they were in perfect condition oddly even though pipe was shot) and bend a tailpipe to follow the stock bends.
I can weld every bit as good as the guy who did the work but, I have no means of bending pipe and local parts stores (Napa, Autozone, Pep Boys) did not have a factory bent tailpipe in the size I needed to match the flowmaster and not choke it.
IMO it was worth every penny, clean nice work and appears stock while also being tucked up as far as possible for wheelin' action.

I do not weld myself but i know people who can. I was going to cut out the old one myself and clamp it together and then have someone tack weld it so it wouldn't come loose. I just want it to sound better and run a bit better on the cheap.

In regards to it sounding like a rice burner, I don't think it will because it is a bigger motor and doesn't rev nearly as high. I would still be using the stock tail pipe so there would still be a bit of back pressure. I am trying to focus more on suspension and ground clearance so i am saving my pennies for suspension upgrades. That is why I only want replace the muffler.

I just got the vortex cherry bomb. Cost about $100 for the muffler and $50 to get it installed. I noticed just a very small gain in power and haven't noticed anything in gas mileage yet.. As far as sound goes I love it. Very deep and full. Not too loud to where you can't get away from the sound but still very fun to show off around town. A lot of guys have them around here ask around..

What is the point of getting a bigger muffler without enlarging the exhaust pipe? Thats what those fartcan kids do to their Hondas.

hmmm point taken. cat back or nothin. How about a 2.25" tail pipe with a flowmaster hushpower muffler?
