hey yall,
when i get some money the motor in my 4runner (22RE) needs to be rebuilt. when i do the rebuild i want to get it bored and stroked. how much will all this cost, and how much gain will i get?

From research that I have done, you COULD get about 30 extra horse out of the 22re bored and stroked, but you will have overheating and reliability problems. You are also going to make your engine non-rebuildable by taking that much metal out of the block.

Don't forget you're going to have to redo the head which is in the neighborhood of $500-$900 depending how crazy you get.

In my opinion, you would be better off, if you're going to spend the money, to build your 22re with forged internals and super strong with a regular stroked crank, then find a supercharger or turbo. Just my opinion, take it for what it is worth.

i've looked into a stroker 22RE myself...every site said that it wasnt worth the time, effort, and money, lots of problems that turn into more money to make

i've seen anywhere from 20 to 40 horse from a cam/headers/intake

dont know much about the turbo, i know stock 22RET's are around 130 horse stock

I'd break those down one at a time. Vehicles with turbos don't follow the same exhaust rules as those without.


A few things:

1) Adding larger pistons (bore) doesn't do a lot for displacement. About as large as you can go is 94mm and a minority of blocks can be bored that big. 93.5mm is about as far as you can go safely on most block. Boring a motor to the next largest size is a normal part of the rebuild process though.

2) Stroking the 22re isn't as simple as stroking a 350 Chevy. It requires a stock crank that is welded then offset ground. After that it requires either custom rods or custom pistons - usually custom (forged) pistons. You'll get about 10% more displacement maximum - 2.6L from 2.4L - but you will have a very solid bottom end and forged pistons. Cost.. Well, that's where it gets nasty - $1800-$2500 for the parts. With a good cam and some head work, power in the 160-170hp range is possible.. I wouldn't believe it, but I just saw the dyno run:

What you're not being told is that you can't do this on stock EFI - either you go to a carb, or you go to a stand-alone EFI unit. Keeping stock EFI and a stroker is going to make you unhappy, as has been proven by guys over on pirate who have tried it.



3) A simple head rebuild on the 22RE is cheap.. Like under $250. Slightly larger valves and some mild port work, add another $200-$400 - that's the value point in a motor build.

4) Supercharger - LC sells the only supercharger that I know of for the 22R series. It's a bolt on deal, I don't know how well it works with EFI (they sell good stuff - but ASK them up front). On a carb, it works well (I've owned it) but isn't very efficient. Downsides: cost (almost $3k) and reliability (the units themselves don't have a great track record).

5) Turbo is my choice for bang for the buck. 200hp is possible on relatively stock internals.. Tuning is required - stand alone EFI is required. Knowledge of how a motor works and the patience to tune it is required. Honest budget, if you have fab skills/tools: $3500 - best case. HP: expect ~200hp.
I've got more than that in mine.. If I had a shop doing the problem resolution and labor, I'd be in it for insane money.

Well built 22RE motors can probably get to 145 hp or so - at under $2000, if you assemble yourself... That's about the limit of stock injectors and stock EFI. If someone says they have more - ask for the dyno sheet, it'll put an end to that talk real quick...

If you want big power changes in these trucks, it's probably simplest to do a motor swap...
