Hi, I'm new to this site and need some help please. I blew a head gasket in my '88 Toyota pickup and I'm not sure if I'm in the right forum for this but here goes. Instead of replacing the head gasket I decided to rebuild a new engine. I was looking for a block to get started but they are tough to find around here where I live. I currently have an '88 Toyota pickup with the 22RE 2.4 in it and the only 2 blocks I can find come out of an '83 & '84 with a 22R motor. Will the 22R block work without a lot of mods or am I better off getting a newer block. Thanks for the help, I'm sure everyone is tired of questions like this, sorry. Lol...

If you are going to rebuild your engine, it is best to rebuild the one you have as you have the heads & short block already which just need to be cleaned/x-rayed by the machine shop. If the current ones not warped and just need work, there is no reason to spend the money to get another long block.

If you have the parts, then go for it. I was just stating that you already have the heads & short block and if there in good shape, might as well rebuild them.

I have most everything I need to build a complete new motor, just looking for a block now but I've been looking on other threads and it seems the '88 and the early 80's blocks are just a little different. I was just wondering how much different and if it's better to find a block like the one I have

Any '85 to '95 block should give no problems. Earlier blocks are indeed different.

The difference is going to be the deck height, there are 3 different heights. Then there always is the turbo block with extra oil holes.
