My 86 4runner with the 22re and 4.10 gears gets 22-24MPG with 31s. I'd say I do 25% on streets, 50% highway, and 25% offroad (4x4). But then again I drive like a grandma, shifting at anywhere from 2000-2500RPMs and cruising at 70mph on the freeway.

Doubtful. They MIGHT get that stock, they rated them around that new, but those EPA estimates are usually pretty bad. With 31's and 4.10's those numbers are highly unlikely. Unless you drive really really lightly like the guy above mentioned (He didn't specify gears either). but it's my experience that to get the truck going and keep it moving takes a lot more than 2000-2500 rpms.
Conversely, a 2wd truck would probably get those numbers consistently.

Well, with my 4Runner (details in sig) I get a pretty consistant 19 MPG with 31's and 4.30 gears. I think that a pickup would get a few MPG's better than a 4Runner, and the 22RE 4 cylender should get better MPG than a 3VZE. Plus, my dad's old 1993 Toyota Pickup 4X4 with 4.56 and 31's and 295,000m miles 5Speed used to get a very consistant 23 MPG. At worst it got 19, and at best, it was 25+MPG.

Extra torque is always good... but it depends on how much MPG you compromise, and what you use the rig for. I could go for some more torque, but I would also like more MPG's, but 19MPG for a 3.0 4Runner isn't all that bad. BTW, both mentioned rigs were/are driven on mostly highway, and little around town. Maybe that will help.

also, i feel like acceleration makes a big difference. how much do you stop and go. "city" here and "city" there make a diff. mine includes stop lights every 1/10th of a damn mile lol.

That sucks. "City" driving around here is done mostly in a city of about 5,500 people, and mostly consists of slow speeds (like 20-35 miles per hour) and a few stop signs scattered around. Sometimes the "city" is Sacramento, and that doesn't help things much either. I've actually averaged better MPG in the city(Well, I timed every stoplight, and averaged about 45 MPH, and 18MPG) than on the freeway(stuck in stop and go traffic averaging 10-25MPH, and 10MPG)
BTW, I usually take off from stop signs/lights at half throttle, or more because I like to get moving, and through the intersections so that I don't get hit by any Illegals that might run the stop sign/lights.
