mid rpm knock - diesel also at gear change
I have an engine knock diesel. When I rev the motor it happens around 2500 Rpm . When driving its at shift point only. Worse when warm.. almost gone at cold motor.
Compression is 165-1 160-2 165-3 165-4.
Truck runs perfect.. just a little noisy. 125k 1987 4runner 22re.
Here is a link to my dropbox with the wave file. http://db.tt/KUCn5oH5

Try adjusting your valve lash, can be done in 30 min or so (see page MA-11):

Thanks for the manual pages! Valve lash adjusted a few weeks back. Something odd about the valves, who ever did them last had slightly less clearance.. they where tight to about .002 less than spec.. maybe in an attempt to remove the knock? I put them back to spec. (Not sure if a bit tighter is normal on higher mileage 22re?)
What I have done: O2 sensor, plugs, cap rotor, timing, checked for hose vacuum leaks, seafoam-ed the motor.. all helped somewhat.. we have reduced the knock just not eliminated it.
Thinking timing chain.. but thought opinions first before additional parts hanging..
