mechanical to electrical speedometer
Here is my experience converting my 4runner from a mechanical speedo to electric.
I decided it was time to do this after my cable speedometer failed on me. im not sure if it was the speedo itself or the cable nor did i care. it was a noisy annoying piece of crap and this sounded like a fun addition to my mess of toyota frankenstein.
so first off here is the collection of speedometer pickups i aquired:
left to right:
3 pin plug found with all electric speed sensors shared by most toyota vehicles thru 2005
1. 90's corolla cheap plastic replacement
2. 90's corolla original aluminum
3. from r150 transfer also a340f
4. 4cyl transfer case and w series 2wd
5. a340h electric 1992 4runner
these all share the same clip pictured, kinda funny..
when i first started this endeavor i pulled the cluster, some harness, the speed sensor, and more harness of course, from the 92 4runner. when i arrived back home i compared pickups with what i had. it was obviously a no go. #5 was to narrow at the base and the gear.. so i inspected and wired up the cluster. more on this later.
after getting bummed out on my find i started pricing new ones as i couldnt find what i wanted at the bone yard. the proper part number for the electric speed pickup for a r150 is: SU6217 from autozone or oreilys its around $175... Good lord thats a lot of money!! but wait fits other vehicles 124 toyota year/models hmmm. yep 92-2005.
after seeing this i returned to the junkyard and got #1 "plastic? well maybe its newer" this lead me here:
the corolla is in the middle as you can see it has fewer teeth and a smaller diameter, well that wont work. the shaft diameter is the same as the r150 though.. modifications were in order. original r150 on the left and modified on the right.
if you look you can see both originals are drilled out in the center. unfortunately the r150 was not drilled deep enough to match the proper overall length needed work. it is what it is.. take your metabo/cut off tool and trim down the shaft of the r150 speed sensor like so:
when making the slot it needs to be wide enough to fit around the pin inside the pickup.
once done install in sensor than in trans.. make sure and lube your o ring, friction sucks.
now on mine i wired into the lexus harness in my kick panel. not thinking that lexus uses a 20 tooth signal as apposed to the 4 that the rest of toyota uses. im assuming that this is the reason that there speed sensor plug is grey and not black like the rest of toyota. this is what happened:
notice the brown parts of the plastiboard this is what it looked like after a plume of smoke rose up from the dash.
not exactly sure why but lexus wires their 3 pin speed sensor completely different that toyota it fits but is very wrong.
this is were corolla sensor #2 comes in. i fried the first one sending 12 volts through the wrong pins.
after unhooking the speed sensor the cluster worked fine still so i just repinned the lex plug to toyota specs and inserted new sensor in trans
next up diagram of cluster this may have been covered somewhere else but ill throw it in anyway...

I was looking over your thread and I'm what im doing is dropping a 93 R150 into a 95 auto. Now the auto is mechanical control and the manual is electronic for the speedo. Looking at your picks Sending Unit 4 and 5 appear to have the same size bore. My question is do you remember what model and year sending unit 4 came out of when you were at the junk yard, Thanks for reading the rant

not sure of the relevance now.. but as it says in the original post that unit came from a g52 or w56 4wd transfercase as well as a w55 2wd the exact trans i pulled this from.
these are out of the trucks and 4runners with 4cyl 5 speeds
