ok so i know this is one of my old threads but once agen when in doubt i tern to yotatech,so earlier in this thread i had a hard time choosing whether i wanted to go with a manual or auto tranny, that's when i came upon this thread http://www.yotatech.com/f114/new-bum...locate-203043/ and saw his set up, then i checked out the sight in his sig, www.radesignsproducts.com and now im thinking of going this wrought wh the baja type shifter, sorry in advanced for this long post but i want some of your guys opinions on this mod. thank you for your time

And just to clarify, (for any1's future reference) the '91 auto, with 31's came with 4.56 gears. The 4.88's weren't put into 4Runners til '91

when it comes to off-road, the auto wins. unless you are strictly mud. but when any grip is introduced the auto is very convenient. that said I would go with the manual... why? because auto's are for sissy's...

oh god so much to respond to...
ok, 1st, it doesn't matter what gears came with what tranny or what truck. The fact remains, it's got the overall effective gear ratio it WAS NOT meant to have with the new outer diameter tires...
2nd, and Auto will give you better MPG providing our sample base is accurate... i.e nobody with 36's and stock gears offering their oh so humble an inaccurate opinion... Why? B/c it has FAR more constant shifts...
3rd, power. Autos MULTIPLY torque as they get into another gear, manuals divide. That is, as a manual shifts, it loses power. The debate is almost pointless b/c the torque converter of a AT kills a ton of power, and the "H" in the A340H doesn't help either...
Why are vehicles with the Toyota A340H trans/t-case so gutless?
(Compared to their 5 speed counterparts with the same motor). Normally, an auto tranny both consumes power and mutiplies torque. In the case of the A340H, the power consumption is doubled by the addition of the hydraulic transfer case, which is essentially like having another automatic transmission inline. But the torque multiplication of the single torque converter isn't enough to compensate for the additional drag. A simple though exspensive solution is to replace the hydraulic chain driven transfer case with a gear driven one.
And the gear to gear of a manual has less of a power loss... But like I said, not when you shift it a few gears...
And an Auto has far more control in the slow going... And that's a fact!
Lastly, I aint typing this stuff again!

R.DesJardin, i really like your setup, how exactly did you wire up the baja shifter, and how do you switch from auto to manual?.....ill have to pm you soon i still have so many questions for you, i love that center console!!!!!

It's not the transmission it's the gutless little motors Toyota uses. There are millions of 4.0 XJ owners out there that love their autos, and more are swapping them in every week(this I know for sure). The 4.0 has the hp to over come the auto's power robbing characteristics. So don't blame the trans. for our motor issues. Yeah and I run a gutless 22r with a weber.

im planing on doing the 3.4 swap and re gearing, so coming from a 3.0 i should be ok, i know im not going to set any land speed records which is fine wh me, i still want to know how you wired up you baja im planing to go this rout

I use a switch to choose between the TCM and the shifter in my other wheeler, the Toyota in the pics is wired direct to the trans., full manual no TCM. I shift because I can.
