while removing my motor and trans my transmission fluid got contaminated so i'm planning to do a drain and refill. Does anyone know what fluid to use to replace the existing fluid...with auto transmissions it's a no brainer but i haven't had to do anything with manual trans fluids before. To clarify my truck is an '89 22re 5 speed manual 4x4

What size are you runnin? Ive got the little tiny ones for hot chocolate in transmission. Ill probably switch out to the normal size for winter

I use Redline MT-90

yeah use 75-90. I used Amsoil Severe gear which turned out to cause the truck to shift really hard. I ended up draining it, putting it in my diffs and getting Amsoils MT (same weight, both GL-5's too i think) and it shifts much smoother now.

Get a pump. I used gravity by zip tying a funnel rigged to tubing to my mirror and waiting a long time between quarts. Not the perferred method.

GL-4 is what u want 2 use in your manual transmission! but its hard 2 find around here unless u order from net

You'll need some kind of pump to fill it. Otherwise, I like to just pour it in through the shifter hole.

I justttt did this today. Put in the Redline MT-90 like someone else has mentioned. So far, the total of 15 miles i have put on it since i changed it... its great. I can now downshift from 5th to 4th to 3rd with out having to match revs. 2nd is still whorish, as i think i have burnt up that syncro a bit. But over all its much better. Much less "notchy" feeling and shifts more like my truck used to 5 years ago before i ran my clutch out of adjustment for 20k.. plus a bad main bearing? i think .. mixed in for a while.

I would recommend the MT-90 for sure.

How i changed my fluid:

-Drained old fluid into a bucket.
-removed side fill port
-found a small, around 1/3 litre plastic bottle with a cone screw on top, like you would find on an old style mustard/ketchup bottle?
-repeatedly filled up the small bottle and squeezed fluid thru the side port till it started coming out.

Probably more slow and painful than other options but i didnt have a pump and didnt want to deal with taking apart the shifter console area again.

you can use gl4 or gl5 that what the toyota book says...
