Lubing the axle shaft and spindle

Just picked up a reman CV axle shaft from Azone. Before I install it,what should the shaft or spindle be lubricated with first, wheel bearing grease, multi purpose or lithium grease, etc.? What is the best/ recommended method a 'shade tree' DIYer can do to properly lube the axle/spindle-just coat it by hand? I did an axle lube 'search' but kept getting the "sorry....." message, Haynes had zip, and I didn't see it mentioned in the posts I'd read here. Thanks for the tips/replies on removing the CV axle shaft on my previous post.
