Looking for more amperage from the charging system
What's go'n on guys and girls. I'm doing my 22re engine rebuild, and I'm weighing my options on how to get more power out of the charging system, since I'm ditching the fan clutch for an electric fan, and I already have 2 red top Optima batteris, a 1000watt stereo, and the 2 100watt each lights on the front, and in the future I'll also have a winch and an air compressor on board. That being said, the 60amp stocker just isn't going to cut it
I've heard and seen of some upgrades that you can installed yourself, but I'd much rather just buy a complete unit.
He's an intersting find though; anyone ever heard of, or have any experience with Mr. Alternator? They have a 120amp and a 150amp for about the same price as a brand new original one at the parts store.

Looks to be a good idea. If it's as easy as swapping in the upgraded one for the stocker I'd say go for it. You'll probably have to figure out some sort of switched charging system so you can keep both batteries full but that shouldn't be too hard.

havent heard anything about mr alternator, but have heard of alot of people swaping out the stocker for a GM 1 wire, 150 amps at idle and 170 i think off idle, they even sell plug adapters for the gm to the toyota, search around theres a couple threads abut it, but if i could just swap out the stocker for a higher amp stock typ unit without braking the bank ide go for it!!

Can't remember where I got my 150A alternator, it may have been Mr. Alternator. I don't remember paying too much more than a stock replacement, maybe $40 more max.
If you do end up getting a bigger amp, might as well do the big 3 wire upgrade too. I used 4ga when I upgraded mine, got it from a welding shop.

just a thought, and i know it might put a little more strain on the motor, but with the fan being gone it shouldnt be a problem... why not build yourself a bracket and run 2 alternators with your 2 batteries? one alternator strictle for charging the vehicle battery amd one alternator strictly for charging your toy (winch, Air compressor, stereo) battery?

Never heard of this "Mr. Alternator" but i've heard of a lot of guys swapping in a high output from some GMC or something might want to research that a little

will the 89-91 work on an 88? both are 2.4L 22res, lol. if it wont, then that site doesnt have much of a selection.
supposedly theres GM one wire writeups all over the site, but i can only find comments about it, ive been searchin the past half hour and cant find a writeup on it. grrr lol

They can upgrade the stock wimpy 60 amp to 130 amp, 75 of which is available at idle! I paid $170.00 shipped both ways @ little over a year ago.

One thing that you've gotta watch when looking at the rated outputs is if it's rated cold or hot.
There is usually a fair amount of difference between the two ratings.
Make sure you're comparing the same thing.
Some less effective alts. might put out good amps. when cold but really drop off when hot.
You really want to look at the hot output ratings on them.

there's 2 issues I see for me going that route... 1) I loose my good, still working core, since they simply rebuild my old one and ship it back; therefor if I have issues down the road, I'm screwed until I buy another one, or ship it back and have it rebuilt again... and 2) $170, the ones on Mr. Altenator's site list for $189 and $210, depending on the output, and that really isn't all that much more, and for an extra $20-$40 I can keep my good working original, wich is honestly worth it to me

I also thought about doing the GM upgrade, but I would SO much rather just have a direct bolt on, instead of one that requires all these custom fabbed brackets and wires; I mean I know I've seen buyable brackets that bolt the GM alts to the 22re (I have no welder, or fabbing skills ), and the wiring really wouldn't be all that hard for me, but after the $30 for the bracket kit, and the $120 or so for a GOOD GM alternator, I'm still getting close to that same price again...
I think that tomorrow I'm going to get ahold of these Mr. Alternator guys and ask them a few questions, mainly what the idle output is and so on and so forth... I'm ready to pay the $210 plus the $15 shipping for a 150amp alt, especialy if it puts out at least half that at idle, lol; that'll be more than my stocker at idle. At night my headlights dim when I go to idle, and that's with NOTHING else on so I know the addition of an electric fan is just going to KILL the charging system, lol
