I have a 93 runner with a 3slow and 5spd. It has 4.56's now but I am looking at getting gears to go with my 33" tires. Can I take a 3rd member out of a Auto with 4.88's for the rear and the front diff from the same truck (v6 Auto)?

Will this work or would I be better off just getting the gears new?

Yep! Just replace the whole third members.

4.88's a good choice for 5-spd 33's

when you swap gears do you have to mach the front to the back?

Yes you do need ot match the gearing front and rear. If you do not the one diff will be spinning faster than the other when its in 4wd = not good.

I just did the same thing to mine. Easy swap. Before I put the front in I removed the stock studs and put in regular hardened bolts so to make the cv axle easier to change out.

How easy do those studs come out? I've got a front diff. waiting to go in, and I've heard about that trick...now is the time to di it I guess. Did you have to pull the stub axles out?

I just did my studs tonight and it was easy just make the nut lose and tap it with a hammer (with the nut on) then when its lose pull it out. Took me about 25min in the truck.

is 4.56-4.88 really enough change to make it worth the money and work?

I can't see any difference in rpm, maybe 25 rpm diff. But I do see better take off from a stop and it pulls hills better. I can run hills in 5th now where before on the same hill I had to drop to 4th. I haven't been thru a full tank yet but looks like it will be a little better gas milage too.

To the OP - I would think twice about using the stock 4.88 diffs. They have an offset pinion and are NOT regearable. If you ever went to a different tire size, or god forbid, had a problem, you will be stuck with buying thirdmembers again.

There is quite a market out there for your 4.56's, it helps greatly to defray the cost of regearing.

for the front (IFS) would i buy the same gear as i would for the rear? as in by two of the same thing? or would i have to get a different type of gear? i know the ratio has to stay the same.

The front is 7.5" "Toyota IFS", the rear is Toyota 8".

BE SURE THEY DO NOT SEND YOU TACOMA GEARS.

if it says that the gear "also fits Tacoma / 4runner w/ factory trd e-locker -check spline count" will it work?
