longer rear shock idea, borrowed from Land Rover

So I had a thought, and please let me know if it's already been done, but I was looking at my 4runner up on a lift the other day and it looked like the rear shocks were the limiting factor for droop. (eibach coils give about 3" lift, more than the advertised 2" anyway, Edlebrock IAS for 2" lift) The pin style shock mount could be cut off and a new mount welded up higher, but it would seem like the hoop style mounts i always see in Land Rover mags would do the same thing and allow about a 2" longer shock with less work. Cut a circular hole where the old mount was, mount the hoop style extension with a few bolts and wa-laaah. anyone?

make sure the shaft wont hit the side of the hole under articulation...

For the next step - cut holes in the body and extend the shock up inside the cabin.... its done all the time on RACE trucks in the "stock" class where the rules permit it...

Just do it and put up lots of pictures and write all about your experience, that way, we all know.

This is exactly what I want to avoid. There appears to be plenty of room for a longer shock. It is pretty crowded under there for the coil sprung 4runners. Easy with leaves, loads of room. I'd like to keep the center of gravity as low as possible, just want more droop for the ditches, w/o giving up compression.

I have a 2" lift in my 93 4Runner. I used a shock from a LX450 in the rear for added length. Suspension write-up here.

Hey Neighbor....

Sounds interesting...trying to determine how my Runner will get up in the air right now...

Do it and post it up!

Was thinking about this myself.

From Downey
http://www.downeyoff-road.com/Suspen...s/1986-95.html
No matter what brand or configuration your 4 Runner rear suspension is, there is the possibility you could gain additional suspension droop (extension) when using longer shocks. Longer shocks, however, have taller shock bodies (oil cans) that could clobber the upper shock mounting panels during suspension compression (bottoming-out). You can use a 2 hole saw to cut out the upper shock mounting panels, bolt-in these 1 tall shock mounting cones, then use longer shocks for additional travel.

EXAMPLE – Downey’s 1 lift 4 Runner rear coils use 9” travel shocks that open up to 23” long. These cones allow use of 10” travel shocks that open up to 25” long.

exactly

Well then the answer to my question is yes, someone has already done it. The typical Land Rover "turret" style shock mount is 2" longer, allowing 4" more droop, but that is precisely what I had envisioned. Too bad the 4runner is gone now. Now I will only need to buy Land Rover parts.
