longbed bobbed

so after a 2 year hunt for a long bed, i finally found one. drove upto NH to get it. i took out an inch of bondo in some spots. the bed is from a 2wd. so the flares do not stick out like the 4wd. i'm gona be running a fuel cell since i got it. i took 18 inchs out! it took me about 3 hours yesterday to get all the cutting done. today i will weld it up and start bondoing. more progress once it happens. plz no rain today!

Maybe I'm not understanding which dirrection you're going but why would you spend all that time looking for a long bed only to cut the back of it off? I'd think it'd be easier to cut less metal out of a short bed.

Then again I'm not a sheet metal person or a rock crawler so my experience is limited.

The rear wheels are a few inches further back, which I think offers more stability in the end. However I still think bobbing a long bed hurts the truck's looks, stock long beds look more like proper pickup trucks than stock short beds. I feel that the bed of a truck should not be shorter than the cab, otherwise it just looks... weird.

However, OP it looks like you did a good job, don't want to knock what you're doing, the above is just my personal pref.

Yeah, what Magnusian said.
A regular cab / long bed has 112" wheelbase whereas a regular cab / short bed has 103" wheelbase, therefore the long bed rear wheels are 9" farther back and a shortbed would be spaced off from the cab.

Extended cab has the same wheelbase, and all that extra room in the cab...

like you guys said. it was easier for me the get a longbed, and bob the back only. other then buying a shortbed, and bobing the rear, and adding that section to the front. plus i already had my frame cut really short, so the bed was sticking off it that 18 inchs i took out. it started raining.

if you read the whole thread you will see that the longbed trucks wheelbase is longer then the shortbed. making a shortbed 9 inchs to short. meaning i would have a 9 inch gap between the bed and cab. you should read more then the first post before you respond

I like the concept. Gives you a better departure angle and should look pretty good when it's finished.

I just now figured this out. You didn't spend two years looking for a long bed truck (which were all 2 wheel drives correct?) you spent two years looking for the bed itself.

Even though I understand it I still feel like a ding bat for having to have it explained.....

You did that with the bed still attached? I'm gonna start my bob this weekend. Do you think it would be easier to pull the bed off to do it? And can I see a picture of the inside of the bed?

I like the look of the flat bed, looked good. Why the change? For me the flat bed does no good, need to haul wood and nat.

i did do it with the bed sitting on the truck. but my frame was already choped so eveything i cut off had nothing below it. you might want to take it off. i took 18 inchs out.
