Little real time fun - trying to split the Auto Tranny/Engine - leaving tranny in

I have no issues with the trans right now, but would like to get the engine yanked out and put on the table.

Its an 87
Its an auto
Do I need to disconnect the flex plate from the view window first? Everything else looks unbolted

I've used search and haven't come across this on this forum or in the FSM so far... any help greatly appreciated - Just about ready for some scotch.

Yes, you do need to unbolt the converte from the flex plate before you pull the motor. Oath wise, you'll pull the converter with the engine. No major problem, but it will make one hell of a mess.

Ok, all the bolts are loose on the flex plate, jack under tranny, propped up a tad, engine will not shake free of the tranny. I've felt and looked under there to make sure all bolts on the outer part of the tranny/starter/exhaust hanger are loose. Is there something else that I'm missing? Do I have to drop the oil pan too? I've got a 5lb sledge out back.

Google gave me this... which doesn't help... I want to keep the tranny in... but if I must... the beast will come out.

Lower down on the page -

'Just for the record, I've found when this thing happens (not brand/model specific) frequently it is the alignment dowels having rusted/frozen in the bell housing. It ends up being almost like there are two bolts left!'

The dowels will likely fight you. I've had troubles with them before.

Well thanks for being my sounding board 250000.... I got it out. Trick (for future searchers) is to jack the tranny up about an inch. Then if you are fortunate enough to have a NICE load balancer, distribute most of the weight of the engine to the back 3/4 of the engine. Then take a sledge hammer.....

Then you should be able to see gaps and you can use your tools to lightly pry the two apart.

Its out, on its cart and ready to be stripped down and reassembled! Easy part is done.
