'88 4-RUNNER

Guys, I just got home and noticed a slow pool of oil(slow drip)coming from under the runner. Took a look and its my oil pan.
Do i need to remove anything,, like maybe the front axle to get this off and a new one in or just tie rods?
Any way to repair the existing pan?

Whereever oil leaks from, it eventually makes its way to the bottom of the engine and falls off the pan. In other words, every oil leak, from the main seal up to the valve covers, "looks" like its coming from the pan.

So before you start banging on the pan, I would get the engine clean enough to eat from (use the "water soluble" spray engine cleaner, but don't go nuts). Then look for the leak; you might be surprised.

I believe that on the 4wd trucks you must a) remove the front differential and axle or b) remove the engine, in order to remove the pan (this is true on the second-gen trucks). It's a big job, and you want to be sure you're fixing the right thing.

PS I assume there's a lot of "rust colored" dirt where you drive. If not, the rust may be all that's holding the pan to the engine ....

you will have to drop the front axle to get the oil pan off

and like noted above clean off the motor real well before you remove the oil pan it could be leaking from some where else

I have found whatever degreaser you use it is best to rinse it off with hot water I run a garden hose from the washing machine or kitchen faucet and it works wonders.

yep, clean it up real good. for all you know, it may be the valve cover leaking.
or it could be a plugged PCV forcing oil out the seals.

Clean the oil and PEI mud off then drop the front diff, then drop the pan.

I made the mistake of thinking it was my oil pan, turned out to be the timing cover. Lesson learned, and I learned to change the OP gasket in record time.

Thanks for the info boys. Yep, it's good ol Island soil thats covering the bottom of the truck. I'll clean her up see whats going on with the leak and will let you know.
