Just installed new CV's and they whine. What gives?
Hey I just installed a new drivers side cv axle in my 93 pickup and it whines like crazy. Enough to give you a headache driving down the road. It does it at all speeds and occasionally changes tone or pitch. Could have I just gotten a bad cv axle or is there something that could be messed up when installing it? My truck is pretty much stock. It has 31's with no suspension lift. I think it might have the torsions turned a bit as the ride is pretty stiff but don't think that you can crank them up enough to mess with the cv's as its still within the stock bumpstops. The wine does go away when I turn to the right and compress the suspension on the drivers side. I did take out the swaybar while I was down there to gain a little more flex but that wouldn't affect anything.
Anybody with some ideas as to what this might be? I obviously have ADD as the cv's are turning without me being in 4wd. I am going to convert to manual hubs but im not going to do it to hide this problem. I don't want to hear this whine every time I'm in 4wd. Thanks for the help I'm planning on taking it out wheelin' today so I want to get it all fixed. Im thinking about exchanging my new cv axle for a different one with its lifetime warranty at autozone but I definetely don't want to give them my core with both ripped cv's and that clicked and clanked when turning sharp or extending the suspension till I get this whine fixed cause if I need to I will throw it back on since its my daily driver.

well, they could have been lacking grease and began to be waring to start with, and if you didn't stick more in there when you installed the new axle, then the ware would be more obvious. You probably noticed all the grease on the axle shaft itself when you pulled it out of the spindle; that's pretty much what all that excess grease is for
but at the same rate, I may be mistaken about the whole thing; this is just a guess

Hey thanks a lot man you nailed it. Just took it apart and cleaned and greased the spindle bushing. Doesn't make a sound now. There wasn't any grease on the old axle shaft I thought it was just going to be a sealed bearing in there.

that's good news
glad it was an easy fix!
yeah the bearings in there like lots of grease it wouldn't hurt to maybe repack the wheel bearings while you're in there
