just fail smog test in cali.........

hi everyone, I just got my 95 4runner back together from a hg replacement. I took it to do the smog check and fail because it wouldnt idle at 2500 rpm......it idles at 2500 for a second or so and then it goes down to 1000- 1500 rpm. also the radiator cap was leaking but I already replace it. if it idles higher than 2500 rpm it idles good. I dont know what to do, any suggestion please, thankyou

Eh, try -60. -20, mine is only about 1800 rpm

I dont think you have it right. It shouldnt be checked idling at 2500, it should be "under load" at 2500 rpm. Why would they check IDLE at 2500 rpm?

Is the timing spot on? Any CEL?

no, what I mean is when you push on the gas pedal and try to make the engine idle at 2500 rpm. it idle at 2500 for a few second and then the rpms gone down to 1000 or so rpm.

You live in Willits. Come up to Mckinlyville and go to Brians Smog. Super honest guy. Took my 82 to him with no problems.

It revs up to 2500 when you make it, it doesn't idle at that.

ok i am using the wrong words......the 4runner idles between 800 - 1100 rpms...when the mechanic revs up the engine to 2500 rpm and try to hold it do to the smog test, the engine would revs at 2500 rpm for a few seconds and then the rpms goes down to 1000 or so...do you guys understand? I might have to do a video....english is not my first language...

i was confused at first, but you just cleared it up for me.

his 4runner idles normal, but when the guy tried to raise the rpm to exicute the smog test, the 4runner would go to 2500 rpm, but it only stayed at 2500 rpm for a few seconds, so they failed him because they couldnt complete the test if his 4runner wasnt at 2500 rpm

I too, live in NorCal and mind failed yesterday due to my timing being off by 5 degrees. It's too high, but besides that, he only tested mine at 1800 rpms. I think your smog guy is definitely duping you. but this is my opinion, means absolutely nothing. Hope you get it fixed.

Am I the only guy on this site that has his CalBAR smog, brake and lamp? Sounds like the problem might be the tech but if you are losing it like that even when you press the pedal it can't be the tech. You can take it some where else but chances are you are going to fail again then be out that money. I suggest you run some of your own tests to see if its a misfire or compression lose somewhere. Sounds to me like a a lose of compression somewhere. That would also go with the head change. Keep us posted

That's the rpm is where the optimal emission check is done. Basically its mid to start of the power band. It's where all the emissions control items should be working at peak. That's the easiest way to explain it, with out getting really in depth, and maybe losing you
