Just bought a 93 4Runner, few questions

Well my girlfriend just got a 93 Toyota 4Runner, and for 2g's we decided to pull the trigger even though it has slightly low oil pressure (170k miles). Her dad and I figure if it gets her to college she got her moneys worth.

Anyways, we live in a hot climate (100+ degrees in the summer) and cold in the winter (below freezing).

The 4Runner requires 10w-30 like most engines. But since low oil pressure is probably due to not-so-perfect maintence the engine is wearing out faster then it could have and the tolerances inside it are getting larger (were talking thousands of an inch here) but anyways, since its so hot here in the summer, would I be good to use 10w-40 or even 10w-50? And swap it for something thinner (probably 10w-30) in the winter? Would that help the low oil pressure????

Second (but should be my main point.....) this runner is the 3.0liter V6. There is some head gasket recall on them. I heard they were still replacing engines for free a few years ago. Does anyone have any idea if they are. If they are, would a 93 up for it? That would solve my oil pressure problem

i had the same thought when I got mine a few months ago. I'm running the 5W30 Castrol Syntec High Mileage. That's what my mechanic recommended, although I don't really know about that whole low oil pressure thing. and if the gaskets haven't been replaced yet they'll replace them for you, but they arent doing the engine swaps unless the unit is totally fubar. Mine wasnt done when I took it in for the power steering relay recall and they just put a new gasket in. You should def go down to the dealership and have them take a look, I went to the one on Frank Lloyd Wright and they were surprisingly helpful.
Where are you guys located?

Why were you recommended 5w-30 over what the manufacturer suggests?

I live in Chelan, WA. Well the engine isnt tip top..... I wonder. Yeah I will definitely take it down. Its like a 40 minute drive to the nearest dealership though.

EDIT: Sorry, I meant to say 20W50. Mah bad. And if the guys at the dealership think the problems with the motor are caused by the whole gasket problem (which they may be) then they will prob try to fix it.
