Junk Yard Find... Need some quick advice.. LOOKn FOR 4.88

Again I ask YotaTech for HELP!!!
Thanks in advance ALL.
Sorry for the terminology in no pro.

I have EDITED this First post to reflect ALL the info I found.
ONOR:
1992 3Lv6 4X4 AUTO (G254)
RIG:
1988 22RE 4X4 5Spd 4Runner (G292)

I was interested in swapping out my 4.10 gears for something proper on 31's
I found a donor truck at the local junk yard.
I found THIS LINK that will explain what axles have what ratios.
I saw that the 4.88 Ring gear is Thinner then the 4.56 ~ I have NO plans of running 33's so I chose these 4.56's
I found the Solid Rear Splined Drive Axles are the same from 4Cyl8" + 6Cyl8"
I figured a way to remove front diff with NO torsion unloading OR knuckle splitting......yea
(I Found that the BASIC Axle tube CAN swap to the ADD diff ----NOTE--- You MUST replace the axle seal and move it to the diff side.
IN TURN I FOUND THE REVERSE IS NOT POSSIBLE
AKA. The ADD axle tube can NOT go onto the Basic Diff)

I Also utilized the manual locking hubs.
So I have the ADD diff disconnected (When UNLocked)
Just like running the OE 88 setup NOT the ADD
(AKA UNLocked and driving = NO front diff / Lock manual hubs for 4X4)

I found the rear drive shafts are the SAME
I used THIS LINK for OE part #'s on seals and such
I also found that same link above to be usefull in determining nut/bolt pitch+lengths

Doing What I can for Future Searches
Now If Only I could EDIT the title to reflect thread internals.

Thanks Yotatech
I would have never done this without guidance
Jeff.

The stock 4.88 are a great find. If they are in overall good shape you will probably be happier with those then you would be with the Yukon's

Yes the rear gears will swap over

Yes the front gears will swap over

7.5 is the size of the front diff
8 is the size of the rear

I am unsure of the differences between I4 and the V6 rears. If there are any

The overall front diffs may have some differences, the thing you noted seeing on the front was probably the ADD (Automatic Disconnecting Differential) system. I am unsure how exactly this work or when it first made its introduction. But as far as the gears go they are the same.

I doubt the drive shafts are the same length, they could be though. I would suggest measuring.

I do not need any thing but grab the gears while you can, even if you don't use them it would be a money making opportunity.

I have NO pics for now sorry guys
Its maroon exterior w/Grey Interior

GREAT NEWS ON THE GEARS!!!!
THANKS for this info
Thats what I needed to hear

1 MORE QUICK QUESTION
Will that transfer case cooler swap onto mine?

I THINK,,, that I have a gear driven case and the donor is a chain case.
Again I think this will be a NO GO.
But it would be a nice add on if it will!

u have a manual trans. there is no need for an external cooler including the tcase.... v6/turbo has a 4 pinion design instead of the 4 cyl 2 pinion design in the 8" centers as well as a few other differences but the center sections will bolt in and the rear is stronger. may have to change the driveshaft flange. axleshafts in the rear is the same but the housing is alot different... been coverd lots of times on here.... The one front 1/2 shaft non ADD side should be the same as urs but the other side will be different if u don't have ADD on ur truck.

Yea been trying to read up on this before I put down all the wrench time with NO air tools.....
Im also NOT fully sure that its 4.88's

Tranny/Tire 28" 31"
Manual 4.10 4.56
Automatic 4.30 4.88

according to this little chart
its 4.30 as its NOT an sr5 that gives it the 31" tires and the 4.88

Still reading...

Now Im even more confused
I have found 3 different ratio charts now
NONE of them match...

IS there an ACCURATE RATIO Chart
that shows What ratios came on WHAT trucks
from year to year?
Im assuming that there are issues with the posting of the
OE ratios VS tire size
ALSO
manual VS auto

This is as in depth as the VW world..
well allmost anyhow..

and I thought this was going to be easy

I found a set of 4.56
8" rear
7.5" front (has auto vacuum control deal)

Coding on the placard are as follows
G254 is the rear
A340-H Is the front
Stated 225-70R15...... weird
The rear is cut and dry, the front some of it jives with the charts
some of it does NOT....
Im not going to ask...
When I count the teeth it works out to be 4.554

Next up
Decide on what DIFF....
rear only for now
Locker or Autolocker or what???

Also need info on HOW to use my new front 4.56 R+P in my current housing
So I can eliminate that auto crap...
Is it a direct swap? I know I asked this... now im looking for specifics..

Thanks again

Remember, you gotta keep the diff ratios the same front/back.

OR gears and such break before you even leave the shop.
We did this on purpose in a SYNCRO vw VANAGON...
was funny to watch it buck till the center diff exploded....lol

Yes I have the rear center section and the splined axles shafts
(I was unsure if the spline count was the same from my 88 to donor 92 so I grabbed the rear axle halfs also @ $12.65 each)

I did get the front diff too
It has that ADD deal on it.
Im looking into procedures to allow the swap of the R+P from an ADD unit
INTO the NONADD unit I have in my 88.
(AKA Ring + Pinion swap)

OR can I just remove that ADD coupler
replace it with my NONADD support axle half.
leave the R+P alone and swap entire units
Still reading on this topic.

My issue is this.... Im having a hard time decoding yotatech talk.
The nomenclature is killing me.
But Im getting there..
Slowly

Well Ive dissembled the front diff + ADD assembly

Now from the looks of it
I can just swap the nonADD driverside stub~tub axle
in place of the current ADD housing

Time will tell as I have yet to remove the front Im currently using
With NO testing unit for trial, Im on hold with this till I remove it.or

Also Looking for info on rear axle overall length
I removed the center diff carrier and center drive axle
(NOT the axle tube/housing)

Are the rear axles from an 88 and a 91 the same width?
And~Or are the drive axles the same spline count from 2 to 4 pinion?

Also looking for Rear Drive Shaft Universal Joint Supplier...
NO china crap from partsgeek.com or the like.

Thanks ALL!

i tried swapping axle tubes like you're gonna attempt, but i ran into a few snags and decided against it and took the easy route. i don't remember everything that stopped me, but one of them was that you'll need new mounting bolts because they're not the same length or something like that - you'll see. search and you'll come up with a few threads on swapping the longside tubes between ADD and non-ADD IFS diffs. i just ended up using a hose clamp to keep the ADD gear engaged all the time.

your rear diff should swap right into your current rear axle, you may or may not have to get a "triple drilled differential flange" to fit the bolt pattern of your driveshaft flange. these can be purchased through most reputable Toyota aftermarket companies that carry gear-related items, like MarlinCrawler.

The Following link states that its possible to do this swap
Its seams that the ADD diff can stay in its housing
The NONADD tube is then bolted to the ADD diff housing
and DONE

The reverse is NOT possible as there is an extra carrier bearing
for the "floating" axle thats between the diff + the decoupler
this does NOT allow the install of the ADD tube to the NONADD diff.
http://www.brian894x4.com/Gearratiosanddiffs.html
Im going to give it a go over the weekend
Still need to get the output flange seals + Gear Oil

Looking into rear drive shaft concerns
Is there are difference in bolt pattern from @ yoke end?
1992 AUTO V6 to 8822RE5Spd

I have the 88 5spd drive shaft
Looking to see if it will mate to the 92 pinion input

Help a Guy Out
Trying to get this sorted

Been searching

According to toyoDIY.com the rear drive shafts are NOT the same
Not shocked by this.

Does anyone know if I can "slip and slide"
the yoke ends of these drive shafts to swap the pinions??
rather then get adaptor flanges?
I have access to both rear drive shafts

Im also wondering if the differences in part # is just the ends???
Also looking into that?

Yes the TOYODiy site shows rear drive shafts as different part#'s
But they sure do look + measure to be near EXACT matches
Im also going to give this a try...
I know the last ujoint end measure to be same=same
down to .001" with the 88 shaft and the 92 pinion flange
Im going to call that close enough.

Been looking into THIS as an option...
Raises yet ANOTHER QUESTION....
What trucks have - Heavy Duty Torque Arms
(from late model with V-6 engine) ????? see page 3

Is this any V6 4runner/pickup?
I again check the part #s in toyodiy.com
found they are the same from my 88 to this 92 I also tried to use a 95
again same #.

thanks ALL..
time to get to work.
Tek.

ALL of this is a direct swap.

The front tubes are interchangeable
placing the basic tube on the ADD 3rd works
Just need to add a new seal at the diff side of the basic tube
as the ADD tubes sealing is done outside the decoupler.
the front 1/2 shafts are all same same
the front drive shaft is also cool!!!

Note.... ALL of this was done without removing any balljoints
leaving the TBars alone also....
(still need info on the heavy duty tbar bracket as linked above.

its currently Lunch break!
The rear will be done here shortly.
Ill post again when its all done

Thanks yota tech
