issues to look for in potential 4runner purchase- not running well

So I see a sweet looking 4runner, 89 black lifted with nice wheels tires.. $2,999 in the ad. I throw up my blazer to sell and think this 4runner will be my main target to purchase. I call them up and they tell me well its not running well, someone took it for a test drive and was acting up.. They may replace the engine but then the price goes up to $4,900, it will be out of my price range so screw it then. http://www.5starautoinc.com/vehicled...?VID=140330126

The guy I spoke to did not know specifically what is wrong with it but that its not running right.. The guy made it sound like it didn't have power.

Any specifics problems that these are known for that I should look for first if I take a look at it? I would hate to drive out there and realize i couldnt salvage whats left of the motor.. If it is something like a vacum leak, cap/wires , all the way to needing a new headgasket then im sure I could do on my own.. What do you guys think? Could be something as silly as a maf sensor huh ? should I take a look at it and try to diagnos the problem myself while on the lot?

I dont suspect a mass used car dealerships will know of common issues with a certain vehicle etc

It could even be a clogged catalytic converter huh? What would you guys look at first?

my 99 blazer ran horrible until i cleaned the maf sensor.

Guess it wouldn't take much to get another one to look like that if I don't get that one

That's why you just pay someone to get it checked out. A 4cyl and auto won't really have power tho.

I would stay away from the 22RE auto combo, especially if they are already talking about the engine having problems over the phone.

ya dont get auto 4cyl...gutless. For around that price you should be able to find a running vehicle. can always do a motor swap if you dont like the 4cyl in something. I have a 7mge in my 88 4runner and solid axle swap. Great engine for what i need has some power to go up hills
