Intermittent start problem

1988 TOYOTA 4WD TRUCK 22RE/5SPD.

Recently has developed a problem. Intermittently will not start. Can here relay on pass inner fender click, but no start. If you hold the key in the start position it will eventually start(after 20-30 seconds). Sometimes it fires fine. Seems if you let it sit it will not start, once it has started if you turn it off/on as many times as you want, it will start normal. Then let it sit and same 20-30 second delay.

Things I have checked:
-bench tested starter, seems to operate normal.
-replaced starter relay with another(used but operational part).
-metered wires leading to relay to insure getting 12vdc.

I have no idea where to go from here. Everything seems fine, and I don't want to throw parts at it. I have always despised intermittent electrical problems. If anyone has any ideas of what to do, or what to check lease let me know. It's driving me nuts.

Can also be the ignition switch. Had the same problem on mine and replaced the ignition switch and it worked great for a few days. Finally installed the Summit Hot Shot kit and it solved the problem. (that was after doing the starter, checking all the grounds, etc....)

agree with starter contacts, about 25-35 bucks in parts and a couple of hours and a skinned knuckle or few and you be good to go
