Instrument panel removal

I have the instrument panel loose and almost free, but there its like there is a cable/ wiring in the back holding it in place. I am trying to lube the speedo cable with graphite. How do you loosen whatever it is to remove the instrument panel?

Yes, there is 3 electrical connectors and the speedo cable.

They all have tabs at the top of them.

Exactly... my gauge may have had 4, but same difference. they can be hard to grab onto to say the least.

The gap between the instrument panel and the dash when unscrewed is maybe half an inch. I haven't the faintest you you remove the instrument cluster without pulling the dash as well.

Supposedly you can loosen the speedo cable somewhere on the wirewall to gain enough slack to access the electrical connections, anyone know any more about this? Also, I detached what I thought was the speedo cable from the back of the transfercase and spun it with a cordless. Only the odometer moved (the battery was connected, keys NOT in the ignition) I assume this is the right cable. Interestingly, you can also take miles off the odometer by reversing the drill (or so my friend says who was in the drivers seat). This does take alot of time and you would have to spend hours or days (literally) under the car with a cordless to make a noticeable dent, but go ahead and try if you must.

Here's a link to where some guys helped me. Follow the cable down from where it comes out of the firewall and you will find a clip I think it has a bolt there dont remember. Then there's another one on the frame. If you get those loose you can pull all the slack out and get the cluster out far enough to see what you are doing. Just dont forget to put everything back where it was. Cause if you just stuff the cluster back in and forget to realign the cable where it should be you will kill the cable. Just don't ask me how I know that. Hope this helps

Can you explain about lining up the speed cable correctly. Isn't just a little shaft with a keyway in it that matches up to the dial side of the connection?

yes, look at the cable, then the plug. align the cable with the plug and push the instrument panel back and plug it in till there is a click when it is properly connected.

If it clicks to put it back, presumably its a matter of simply the cable connector out from the back of the speedo. Correct, or will I break something?

I figured out that you have to removal the speedo cable from the brackets the hold it along the body underside from the back of the transfercase to the firewall. I'll do a write up later.

I had to drop the steering column and there is this black metal bracket with a half domed bit on one end and I can't figure out where it goes. Any ideas?

So you get it back together Matt?

If so, how did that lube work?

Figured it out. It goes just to the left of the two front bolt that hold up the steering column.

I haven't driven it yet, but I will do so this evening. A note to others, remove the driver seat when working on the dash. It is so much easier.

After using copious amounts of graphite spray down the speedo cable, the sound is now gone. It wasn't that difficult to do, I will write more later. Also, the speedo is no longer jumpy at 30-40km/h (18-25mph). Smooth and silent.
