Installed a tow hook, question

I bought a towhook from autozone the other day, then went to lowes and got some grade 8s. Well the hook doesnt mount right up against the frame, there about an 8th inch gap between the hook and the frame.

Heres a pic of what i mean. I threw some washers on there. What should i do? Is this alright?

Red line shows what im talking about.

sorry about the blurry ness, its raining outside.

yeah just knotch that metel with a dremel (or some elbo grease and a file ) so it'll clear the part of the hook where it's hitting

I guess the other option would be to heat the hook up with a torch and try to bend it down some, but good luck with that

yeah an angle grinder might be easier

but there are those little stone grinding wheels for dremels, one of those might do the trick

Should be a 10.9 (Grade 8 equivalent) METRIC bolt. M12 x something

Metric 8.8 is a Grade 5 equivalent.

Tow hooks are dangerous at best. You'd be better off with a shackle hanger and shackle.

to clarify da wabbit's comment-
open tow hooks are dangerous, particulary ones that point downward since the strap can fall off the hook due to lack of tension or if there's a sudden rebound in the strap causing it to loose tension against the hook.
hooks with spring-loaded catches to prevent the strap from falling off the hook are okay.
