Installed new clutch, not ticking noise
I have a 1986 4runner with a 22re and 5spd manual trans. I installed a brand new flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, pilot bearing, throwout bearing and gear oil in the trans and t-case. When I started the truck the trans was making a ticking noise when the clutch pedal was pressed down. I backed it out the garage and drove it back in with no problems. No ticking or burning clutch smell when i was moving it. This ticking sound is only when the clutch pedal is pressed down. it sounding like the throw out bearing was ticking on the pressure plate fingers. I pulled the trans out again to inspect everything to see what was wrong, but i could not find anything wrong or broken. Everything looked good. I pulled the pressure plate and clutch disk back off checked the torque on the flywheel bolts, looked at the throw out bearing, it was seating correctly and both clips were holding it securely to the clutch fork. I reinstalled everything and I was still getting the ticking noise when the clutch pedal was pressed down. I decided to drive the truck from the garage back to my house, about 15 miles. The ticking noise happened when pressing the clutch thru every gear, but after driving it for a few miles the ticking noise stopped when the clutch pedal was pressed. I got the truck home and let it sit for a few hours, went back out to check it out again and now the ticking noise is back, but after it is driving for a few mile the tick stops. I don't know what could be causing this tick and now that is intermittent I'm completely frustrated. I know a new clutch needs a breaking period, but that does not mean a ticking noise. Has anyone experienced this problem or have any suggestions? Thanks

New Clutch Issues
Did you ever figure out what the problem was with your clutch? I'm stuck - I've changed everything twice and I'm still having a weird ticking/grinding noise when I press on the clutch pedal. My situation sounds exactly like yours...

Nope, i never figured it out. After i drove it a few miles the ticking noise stopped and i haven't heard it again. I've been driving it as is. It maybe a ticking time bomb now, but who knows.

If you are talking about internally in the bearing, I thought it was a sealed type bearing

^^^ Terry is right, i forgot about that...many kits have a packet of goo to put there and on the splines. But technically the pilot spins because of contact with the input shaft, but we all know the input shaft isn't actually a tight fit and could slip a bit. I haven't always put lube on the tip of the shaft (easy...) and i have never heard a peep from the pilot/input contact. I have had throw-outs go bad (read: explode).

My kit did come with the packet of goo, and I put it on the tip of the shaft and the shaft itself.
Maybe the clutch kit I got was defective in some way.
Thanks for all the input

I've always wanted to put a zip tie around someones driveshaft and not cut it short. So that everytime the drive shaft rotates it lightly taps on the body/frame/something and makes a ticking noise. Never remembered to and it wouldn't cause the exact symptoms you're having.

^^^ thought of that....but you want to get those big zip-tie for heating ducts, so i makes a bunch of noise, no mistaken something is wrong. It's a good time, but usually the person is out of sight by the time they decide to pull over and check it out. I like putting grease under the door handle myself....instant gratification.
