I'm stumped. Wont start unless I move VAF lever

Sounds like it wants to start but doesn't uness I move the vaf piece about half way. Then it starts. Doesn't matter if tps is plugged in or not. Won't start when I Jump the fuel pump from diag. box, only when I move vaf.
When I go to give it throttle, it bogs engine down and seems like it's gonna stall. Engine stalls when I take hand off VAF thing.
Weird????

Jump directly from the battery positive to the Fp terminal in the diagnostic check connector and see if that helps.

Silly question....but is the air hose hooked up, uncracked, with no air leaks?

The air intake is designed to open that valve thus allowing the fuel pump to turn on and the engine to start. Is the flap....well, flapping when turning over?

DC- the ignition switch and COR should turn the fuel pump on during cranking and the AFM keeps the COR (and fuel pump) on once the engine is running.
You know that.

Even if the intake duct is disconnected, it should start then die.

Vaf

Thanks for responding and happy holidays to everybody.
I will jump it tomorrow from the positive terminal on the battery. I was jumping the fuel pump using the diag. terminal and I could hear it go on.
No it wasn't a silly question. I'm not much of a mechanic and am open to any suggestions. I'll double check to see if there are cracks.
It starts using the vaf even when I have the air ducts off that sit in front of the throttle body but I understand what you're saying about them having to be crack-free to trigger the opening.
ANother thing I should add is that I took the whole ignition out because the key wasn't turning the ignition. I have been using a screwdriver to turn the white round thing that looks like an electrical plug from a heavy duty extension cord to start it. This is my first 4runner. Thanks a gain for taking your time.

So, what changed between now and the thread you made just a few days ago? You're getting the same information that several people already gave you:

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...ve-vaf-199596/

And you never got back to us about what you tried and what you didn't, just what codes you have...

Just put a jumper wire in the fuel pump test plug and that will make the fuel pump run as soon as the key is turned on, otherwise it sounds like your AFM is possibly bad and would need to be replaced.

things I tried

I jumped the fuel pump by using a paper clip in the diag. area and it still doesn't start. Is there a difference between jumping straight from the battery and jumping from diag port? If so, I'll try it. Hell, I'll try it anyway. . It comes on with the key but it still does the same thing and won't start. I rechecked the timing and it seems ok. I reconnected a lot of things and got rid of the error codes to the point where I don't have any. Thanks again for all the input and help!
