Igntion problems

I tried looking up some articles on this topic and found a few, but they did not specify to much on symptoms. I have a 88yota with a 1990 toyota 3vze. I have a basic knowledge on mechanics.anyways the truck has always gave me sporadic problems sometimes she will start as soon as i get in and sometimes she will turn over forever and never fire. Well i replaced plugs, wires, cap amd rotor button and timed. the truck doesn't start at all now . so i started tinkering around, i pulled the wire out that goes.from the distributor to ignition coil on the coil end and hovered it over the coil turned the motor over and she started to fire but i had to keep turning the motor and it started up. I have surpassed my knowledge on basic motor work.and i am into ignition parts that i have not worked with. She also would start before at a low idle and then something would just "kick in" and the idle would jump up to normal. She also bogs down around a little bit higher rpms. People were talking about the relay. How would i test one? I am lost on it if you have any info or ways to check igniter, relay. Just a little info on similar symptoms to help eliminate possible problems. Just ask questions because i have alot of stuff i have replaced that i thought would fix it. I will try to get pictures up today of some of my motor parts. I have no engine light
