ignition timing and gas mileage
I want to find out what mileage others are getting with a similar set up to mine. I have a fresh rebuilt 22re with about 700 miles on it and finally got the base timing set correctly, before it was not set base timing. I have eb rv head 268 cam bored .20 over and new exhaust 2.25 with a flowmaster 40 and I currently have my timing set at 8 degrees advanced.

I've got an 88 4runner with nearly 270Kmiles, 5spd, I've put about 25000 of those on it and I get around 20 around town and about 25 on the highway with the timing at 5BTDC (stock setting, diagnostic jumpered- only way to reliable set the timing) and 31" tires.
I've also got a 91 pickup with 178Kmiles, auto, and it gets around 17 in town and about 22 on the highway on 29" tires. Timing also at 5BTDC.
Both are stock exhaust manifold to 2.25" aftermarket (read: CHEAP / damn cat theives) cats and 2.25" pipe into the mufflers, 4Runner is a magnaflow and the truck is el cheapo turbo muff and 2.25" out the back.

I timed mine and tested it for about an hour and a half today and I now have it set at 10 btdc, I tried 12 but it seemed a little lean and it also pinged so I backed it off to 10. I hope this gets my mileage back where it is supposed to be. The power at 10 seems good to, it just seems that it moved the power band down to the lower rpm's.

Yeah when I first timed it my tps was out of adjustment and it wouldn't idle down with the diagnostic ports shorted so we just timed it to run good and it was like at 15 or 16 btdc and was getting like 19.5 to 20 in the city and then I got my exhaust and the next day decided to adjusted the tps and get the timing right, and now I am experimenting to get the mileage good again or close to what it was.

Yeah.....half the time I can't shift that early with the hills around here. I'll just be patient then, get my EGR hooked back up when I can, and see what happens. I'm averaging 19mph.....but, this all stock settings and equipment, too. So, apologies for the slight hijack.

no its ok I didn't even realize it was you, you change your avatar on a weekly basis now. yeah 19 is good I will be happy if I can get that i the city. I took mine hunting today and had some pretty big hills to climb and for some dumb reason last night I thought that retarding my timing would help me, needless to say it was not fun trying to pull those hills with the timing off today! hopefully it will be good now though!

Lol...yeah retarded timing is....well....retarded...hehe. I've tried advancing mine, but it pings whenever I do. Of course, that was with 8* or more. I suppose I could try lower, but didn't think it'd make much difference in power or mileage. Engh...worth a shot. Might wait until I get that EGR hooked back up, though.
And, my avatar...that my friend is ever reflective of my mood. I'm not feeling much like a placid lake, however. More like a babbling brook. But, hey! One can aspire, no?

Yeah...it's nice, isn't it? I imagine myself paddling into the cove on a canoe hearing nothing but the paddles strokes and the craft cutting through the water.
