I'm aggravated. I'm already fed up with IFS and ready for the solid axle so any new IFS problems just aggravate me LOL.

I've blown up two CV axles in i dunno 3 yrs, and now with all this snow I've been using the front quite a bit. Last weekend I was up in the mtns, in the snow and everything was great till the afternoon when i got a loud and violent vibration from my right front. I investigated, and determined it was coming from the CV axle. I drove the piss out of it the rest of the day/night hoping it'd just grenade so I would feel better having killed it. Well it survived.

I messed with the front, lowered it a bit to see if maybe it was binding.. even tho the driver side is a 22yr old OEM original fricken cv axle. the aftermarkets seem to splode.

I spent 4 cold, muddy disgusting hours putting in a pass side CV 2 days ago in the frigid weather and then went to the hills that night, it was fine that night, the following day and most of today till tonight....

same intermittent grinding vibration from the pass side. I'm driving around locked in cuz its snow here, 30-35mph tops which shouldnt be an issue considering these trucks come with ADD for christs sake.

Theres play in the pass side output shaft on the differential but I can't remember how much is to much. it seems excessive to me but i dont know. The axle i took out seemed OK, and the new one seems OK. It's almost like the thing is shaking likes it's to loose. Theres no output play from the dif on the drive side, only the pass side output has play.

I seriously was just about to reply to my own thread and ask if my spindle bushings were worn..

How can I tell? Should the axle have any play in the spindle at all? or fit snug? Cuz theres play in there as well.. but I'm not sure how much is to much?

If thats it, I got two spare spindles chilln so I could just swap em. If they're not bad to =p

i belive the way to check, if you grab the part on the cv closest to the tire and move it up and down, if its snug.. then its good. If it has play, replace em'

cv axle is free, lifetime warranty... i dunno where to find the the bushings besides the dealer, ideas?

ooooo, i already though you bought the spindles.
thats the next thing i need to do mine, not to sure how big the job is..
i shouldve done them while replacing my cv's

unfortuanetly toyota is closed so i cant get the parts today so im gonna just be forced to use the used spare assembled spindle i got and pray it lasts me through the winter. It's def not as worn (not AS much play as my current spindle) but... theres still some.

So, this is the damn nefarious rattle I've been hearing for the past.....I dunno.....few years? LOL! Wonder how long she'll continue to hold on......my '86. I'm in no position to this job any time soon.

If may piggyback a tad, anyone have any idea how play tolerance is allowable for the side axles on the IFS? I have atleast 1/8"-1/4" of play. I can wiggle the flanges pretty good that much. And, what would need to be done to resolve this? Any idea'rs?

I did the spindle swap today.. took i dunno 5 ish hours maybe

all i know is the vibration is gone and the cv shaft fits tighter than a nuns .... woohoo in the spindle now.

before it had lots of side, up-down play ...

workn great. its a lot of work but not to bad, just tedious. You dont need to disconnect the halfshaft from the differential FYI .. i think thats the most aggravating thing to do, ever. lol hell id almost rather pull the motor than do that, and im not being sarcastic, i hate it!

what exactly is moving this much? Are you talking about the shaft that fits through the spindle... like if you grab the lower CV and move it around? Or you talking in/out play?

according to the FSM the shaft shouldnt move more than 1mm in/out ... as for up/down the fsm has zero information that i could find... but comparing my driver side (which i have no problems) and now with the spindle i swapped in with bushings... theres zero up/down side/side play.. still slight in/out but according to fsm that is OK.

fyi i have no idea what tolerance is OK for the differential in/out play tho.. i have some on the pass side, none on the driver... but ive always heard/read theres some in the pass side... but who knows... someone chime in plz!

I'm talking about the side axles coming from the front diff.......where the CV axle mates to. Yes, on the pass side. I can grab the mating flange and wiggle it up/down and in/out, and I'm just not sure if it's supposed to do that as much as I'm seeing. Honestly, I've not checked the driver's side, yet.

I'm sure the spindle bushings are shot, though, causing atleast.....maybe most.....of the rattling. The write-up from Bob sounds exactly like what the 4rnr is doing. Stepping on the brakes was a big red flag. All this time I thought it must be the calipers clacking, but the calipers, pads, and all the hardware are not that old. Only a few years. And, they're quality. Besides, I've looked at the brakes multiple times over the course of time.

ah great mine is now making the sound sometimes with the hub unlocked...
i guess i need to make sure my hub is actually unlocking.

Good post, never noticed this noise/vibration till this snow storm. I'll check mine tomorrow. I'm not going to mess with R&Ring it. SAS is coming soon.

my upper and lower control arm bushings are shot. I just did a MAJOR IFS overhaul (everything but the UCA and LCA). I had a terrible clunking sound and I figured the overhaul would fix it.
AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH No!
Instead of dealing with the UCA, LCA bushings I ordered my IFS Eliminator kit yesterday!

yea i need to replace my lower pass side balljoint but I don't wanna screw with the IFS or waste anymore money on it because my hope is to have the solid axle under it this spring. oh money oh money where are you?
