IFS CV, to clearance or not?????

I have a 85 4runner with 4.5 inches of lift that I want to make a CV rear driveshaft for. I have an IFS front shaft to use. Do I need to clearance it to be able to run it in the rear? I am running the stock W56 tranny with single gear driven t-case. I do not wheel this truck but I do take it on fireroads on camping trips.

Thanks

Chris

I can't say if you'll need to grind out more angle or not. HOWEVER, the bolt pattern at the cardan joint end will not match the rear t-case flange. You will need to pick up a multi drilled flange from say All Pro, Trail Gear etc.

or drill your own holes in there. it not hard at all. why are you wanting that type of shaft?

I already have a triple drilled marlin flange. The reason that I want a CV type flange is because of vibs and noise. In order to get rid of the vibs I had to set the pinion angle so that the U-joints are in phase with each other. 4crawler has good info on his website. However I am getting bad gear/grinding noises when I am in-between accel and coast. I have also run into the same problem with my 85 PU which is my trail rig. I had a CV driveshaft built for it and it took care of the noise and vibs. When I put that driveshaft in my 4R it fixes the problems with it also. When I get a minute, I will measure the DS angle when my suspension is total extended. I was just hoping someone who know for sure one way or the other to save me some time.
I have a couple earlier 84-85 CV shafts but I am saving them for my trail rig and for a buggy that I am getting ready to build.

Also, the stock rear gear drive t-case flange is too small to work with a CV shaft with the exception of the 86-87 23 spline t-case that came behind the R151F. It has the largest flange that will fit on a gear drive t-case and it uses a larger size bolts also.

i have the same problem with vibs! only in the front shaft though. and i thought that phasing is lining up your ears on the shaft! and pinion angle has nothing to do with phasing! you can have a perfectly phased d-shaft and still have vibs becouse of bad pinion angle!

Phasing the u-joints not only requires you line up the ears, but also set the angle on each u-joint the same. Ex, if you have 11 degree angle at the t-case, you have the rotate the rear so it is at 11 degree also. In reality, you need to set the pinion a little under so when the rear tips up under accel, it because 11 degree. Usually this means 1 to 2 degrees below.
If you have a CV shaft, you need to turn the rear pinion up so that there is no angle at single u-joint under accel.
Also, keep in mind that if you pull the slip yoke out and rotate it before putting it back in, you will cause the driveshaft to go out of balance. How bad depends on the shaft.
