When fully warm, my 22RE will be idling at 1000RPM. Is this bad? I would like it to idle around 800, but my idle adjustment screw is all the way down! What is most likely the culprit of this, vacuum leak? I removed and cleaned my TB today and there has been no change. Any ideas in how to bring my idle adjustment screw back to life?

Has it done this for a long time,gradual? all at once. What temp thermostat do you have. I had a colder thermostat 180 vs 195 or so, and the idle ran a little faster. Or a vacuum leak could be it, others will chime in. I am yet knowledgeable enough to say.

Um, as long as I have owned it, it has been doing this. I am not sure which thermostat? How can I tell?

Could also be the small oring on the adjuster screw? or even your idle air control valve

the IAC works by coolant and a bi-metallic strip no?

Where is the idle air control valve located?, I have looked in my manual but cant seem to find it. How do I know if it is working? There should be an O-ring on the adjustment screw itself? Will replacing the PCV valve have any affect?

It's underneath the intake manifold behind the throttle body. You can pinch the hoses to it to see if it's causing your idle problem.

edit: It's in the 88 FSM on page FI-66. It looks like it's heated by both an electrical heater and a coolant line.

I will be checking the Air valve tomorrow. So I am assuming after I pinch it, if the RPMs decrease, then it is working correctly? I am also going to check my TPS as well. I may decide to replace the throttle body, we will see after these tests. I just want to get the idle back to factory! AND get the function of my idle adjustment screw back

your timing could be off too..

when my screw was all the way down it was still idling at 1100. so i checked my timing and it was 8 degress advanced.. so i adjusted timing to factory spec and then had to screw out the idle screww.

Yeah, the timing is the next thing on my list. It acually idles right at 1000-1100 when it is completely warm, so maybe you had the same problem. So after you adjusted your timing, what happened to the idle? Could you screw the adjustment screw out, and bring the idle back to factory?

yea when i adjusted the timing the idle dropped to abt 400 so i adjusted the idle screw out. and now it idles at 900... i have never seen a toyota idle at anything lower. even tho the stock sticker says 750rpm,

the timing that you are referring to is the ignition timing correct? Just gotta make sure because there is also cam timing

I'd check your thermostat. My truck was idling high all the time, and when i pulled out the thermostat I discovered that it was stuck open just a little and my truck was never fully heating up. Swapped in for a new 195 and it runs perfect.

If it is idling too high after tightening the idle scew all the way down then I'm betting that the butterfly valve in your throttle body is still partially open. It could need adjustment or it could be dirty or your throttle cable could be too tight and not allowing the return spring to work. I'd check the cable first.

why do people mess with that idle screw, there is absolutely no reason that screw that is practically locked will cause any change in idle.

The idle screw will start to vibrate loose over time. Then you have to mess with it! Once the o-ring gets hard then it shrinks and no longer holds the screw in its correct place. A lot of times people up the idle rather than replacing the fuel filter. Believe it or not the local dealership here wont change a fuel filter on a 22re if you ask them to. They claim that their mechanics break more things trying to get to it than its worth. Funny, I didn't break anything when I replaced mine!
