I think my 88 4runner is dead

Like the title says, my 88 4runner died yesterday. It is a 1988 22RE (i think) 5 speed w/ 31" tires and stock everything. Here's what happened.

I was driving home on the hwy doing about 60 mph when i came to an upward hill and started losing speed FAST. Once at the top it picked back up again. came to another hill and the same thing happened but this time it didnt recover when the road leveled out. Now these arent steep hills by ANY means. I quickly exit the hwy and the engine cuts off. I restart and baby it as far as i can, I was shooting for my house since it was only 2 minutes away but never made it there. once it died a 2nd time i pulled onto the shoulder of a service road and let her rest. At this point the motor didnt make a single strange noise, just acting odd.

Check the oil and the dip stick was BONE DRY. Now i check the oil at least once a week while filling up so i know it hasnt been like this for very long. this runner doesnt even leave oil spots where she sits like my other one.

After a nice walk back to the house i filled her up with oil (full 4 quarts of oil to bring it up to full) and it ran again. And appeared to run great. so i brought her home and checked the exhaust for any oil smoke, checked the radiator and gackets for oil anywhere it shouldnt be. no luck. Im not sure where all of the oil went.

I had to get back to work and had no choice to take the runner so away i went. About 10 minutes on the road and i start losing power again and the engine cuts out as im taking my exit off the highway. i restart at the bottom of the ramp and thats when everything went south. It made some of the worst knocking, tapping, and banging sounds i have ever heard come from an engine. Imediately pulled into a parking lot and checked the oil again. This time it was full.

Could i have fried my oil pump when it ran out of oil?

should i replace the oil pump and pray?

Sorry for the rambling. Any advice would be MUCH APPRECIATED

Could i have burnt all that oil that quickly? im looking around for rebuilt motors now since i figured the bottom end is fotched.

Im not bothering with rebuilding it myself since my engine stand is already taken by a 96 1UZ for my 90 2door. the fun never ends

Welcome to Yotatech, but his isn't a first gen.. First gen is 1985-89.
Still not sure why the 85's are called first gen's, they have a different front suspension.

Haha never thought of that! If only that was really the issue.

Anyone know of a good place to look for a rebuilt engine? I'd like to go through it myself but dont have the time for that these days

I have bought one off of these guys. Really happy with the motor. They did a great job in refurbishing it.

http://unitedengine.com/

I have rebuilt top ends and I get in to $200 easily, a whole build depending on how deep you go and I see you mentioned you dont have time to build one, a rebuild can exceed their price.

I have checked salvages around here and they want $600 for a high mileage motor and $800 for a low mileage motor.

$1k is alot, but call salvages and think you will be surprised at what they want.

Hope this helps, I have been very pleased with this motor. If you can do the install your self, cost wont go up much, but if you have it done, cost is going to add several hundred.

Thanks for the heads up Terrys87! Nice build threads by the way. Took a few hours of hiding at my desk to get through them all, but very informative! Thanks!

Sorry to hear about the major oil consumption.

I say tear her down, fix what needs to be fixed (sounds like a spun bearing) and go from there.

thanks swimmerboy! Im leaning more towards replacing the whole thing. my engine stand is being used by this 1UZ right now and im further from getting that project done than fixing this one.
