My 4Runner won't start. I went through this puddle, and the way back through (after I turned around because we dead-ended at a DEEP one) I got stuck. It sucks because I was being cautious! And I did check the depth. But, I went too fast and the water piled up, the engine died quick.

I've had trouble with the starter before when it gets wet, but this time it wouldn't turn over at all. So we left it where it was overnight. It was late and it took an hour and a half to walk back. Froze my butt off (yeah yeah shouldn't have only had one vehicle).

Came back this morning with my buddy and started messing with it after we pulled it out of the water with his truck. There was water in the air box so I drained it out as best I could (it was icy) and shook out the air filter. Took out all the plugs, sprayed in some WD-40, and turned it by hand a little bit (I thought maybe it was just on a bad spot on the ring gear, but last time I looked there was nothing wrong with it). Then it did turn over a few times, when I turned the key, but stopped again. It sprayed some fluid out of the cylinders, not a WHOLE lot, but enough to get the fender wet. And it really only sprayed that much out of the #5 cylinder (back driver side?).

But now I can't even get the engine to turn over by hand. I'm only using a regular sized ratchet though, no cheater pipe or anything.

We gave up and towed it back, and now I'm charging the battery.

What should my next move be? Get the starter checked? Drain the oil? Take off the plenum and look for water?

I think you might be the only stock truck i've seen with it cut like that. fix it dude, 3.4 swapage.

Haha yeah...Chopping the back is about all I've done to it.

I actually have plans to put a 1UZ-FE in it...might have to accelerate them now. I still have a long way to go though...I have the trans, still looking for a good donor car and another top shift t-case. And I have to buy a welding machine...my old one is no longer available.

First off that is one great looking runner, I've never seen one chopped like that on stock sized rubber. Most of them are up on 38's and beat to hell.

Now my advice is to let the battery charge so you can use the starter to turn it. Pull all the plugs and shoot some WD-40 in the holes before you turn it. I read that you tried to turn it by hand using a regular ratchet and I've got to tell you that you may not be strong enough to turn it like that. Also be sure and check the oil for water. If the dino is contaminated change it before you crank it, don't want to spin a main when she turns.

edit: I had a friend hydro lock his ranger back in Colorado and we pulled the plugs and cranked the hell out of it. It shot water for 10 feet. The bad thing was the auto tranny was also full of water and had locked down. After turning the engine a few times the damn tranny locked up and kept the engine from turning. Don't ask me how it did it but it did. We had to drain and refill the tranny to get the engine to turn over.

Thanks! I'll try to turn it again tomorrow once the battery charges. Hopefully it doesn't rust in the cylinders...I sprayed a crap ton of WD-40 in there so...We'll see if it sprays out. If it won't turn over tomorrow I'll see about getting the starter checked, and change the oil.

If it still won't work I'll change the trans fluid.

Definetly sounds like you hydro locked it, you should be able to turn it over by hand with a ratchet, im guessing at least one bent connecting rod..

i have cranked a 5.0 with a rachet and a cheater bar without a problem so i think you can turn one of these small motors by hand unless its locked up then ha good luck with that but. just listen to the guys on here they know what they are talking about. when you are cranking it over without the plugs just remeber that wd-40 is your friend you cant use enough and let it sit for a day or two before you put the plugs back in

Good looking runner... bites that it got drowned... don't forget to check/change the diff oil too with the breathers on a hot diff. submerged for a while like they were you almost def. have water in the pumpkins.
If you have'nt yet and you plan to run wet trails again get some hose and relocate the breathers higher up, also a snorkel kit will help prevent future drownings (it would look good on the runner and maybe even provide cooler intake air double bonus lol)
