Hi everybody...

I have an 88 pickup, it has the 22re in it. I have been having a starting issue for quite a while now. All I get is the click. Here is what I have done...

Replaced the starter with a remanufactured one from Toyota
Replaced both battery cables
Checked battery at Autozone, checked out good
Installed the Hot shot relay that 4crawler talks about on his page

I am still having problems with it starting. I am wondering if the computer could be causing this problem. When I work on the truck, I disconnect the battery until I am done, then re-connect it. It seems that it works for about a day then stops. Could I be resetting the computer?

I am no mechanic by any means, but it seems to me if I have a good power source, good cables, good starter and relay, then I should be able to start it.

Any help would be appreciated,

I don't think it is the battery because I tried to jump it and it still wouldn't work.

I replaced the starter, so they should be good.

have you checked all the grounds around the engine?
can you trigger the starter by applying voltage directly to the terminal on it?

I checked the battery ground. I am not sure where the other grounds are, that is one thing I've been trying to find out.

I did try running a cable directly from the battery to the starter. It worked a couple of times, but also didn't work a few times. I was using my old battery cable, so that may have been a problem...

As for the grounds, theres one on the pass side of the block up on the intake manifold, then there should be one driver side going from the block to the fender well.
Also one from alternator to drive side of block...

I am having the same trouble tonight. I read the manual as I was only getting one click too, and it said to push the truck while in gear, and when i did that it started cranking, but we had to do the process each time we tried to get a crank. I have a REMAN starter and the contacts where the main wire were a little coroded. I am going to wire brush the contacts and then make sure I am timed then try it again tomorrow.

THanks, I'll look for the grounds later. This has been pretty frustrating, I hope I don't have to end up taking it to a shop.

also, if you have a voltmeter and a friend to turn the key...
check the voltage on both terminals at the starter when it won't crank.

Have you checked the positive cable where it screws on to the starter? All I had to do to mine was clean it with a wire brush (both the stud on the starter and the end of the cable, and booyah, it cranks right over, I also have a reman on mine too.

Yep, I bought a whole new cable and it's clean. I'm thinking it's a grounding issue.

This picture isn't very good, but can anybody tell me if this is a ground connection? The wire that I circled isn't hooked up to anything, I'm wondering if it hooks up to the connection that I circled...

Let me know if you need a better picture.

When you're looking at the battery, do you see a thick wire (normally it's black) starting from a the negative terminal & ending at the engine block? I tried but can't make it out from your pic.

Yeah, I actually replaced that cable.

This connection is right under the oil filter on the Passenger side. I think you can see my blue oil filter in the picture.

In my truck, an '86, there is a cream-colored wire from the fusible link to the positive terminal. I have had to replace that wire due to corrosion. Even though the wire's insulation was in good shape, the wire itself was crunchy, corroded and no longer conducting efficiently. Does your truck have the same setup? Is that wire in good shape?

One thing that you might want to do is to check your solenoid switch. If its bad then your wouldnt be getting enough power to the starter to crank the engine. Another thing is, if you have to push the truck in order for the engine to crank on its own then you might wanna add some oil. If there isnt enough oil in the engine then you could be creating the engine to go into a pre lock stage. Just make sure you check that. Once the engine is locked...you might as well get a new one.
