I can get free Axles what are your thoughts?

I can get the axles from a 1986 Chevy Pickup. It is the Dana 44 front and GM 14 bolt rear. They are in my father-in-laws old truck. the frame rotted and can't drive it anymore. It just sits around. Since the price is free, is this a good way to go or should I keep looking for the Toyota front axle? If I would use them what gear ratio do you think is best for 33's. Should I use a 4.88 or go up to 5.29? Thanks for your help.

From what I've read the Toy SFA is as strong as a Dana 44. I'd say get them and then either trade them for a Toy axle or sell them and use that money to buy the Toy axle.

your going to want to run 37's + with the 14bolt in the rear, its a big ship anchor of an axle, and 5.38 gearing

that is a really weird combo for axles, 44 and 14 boplt.... if you wanna go big and strong, sell the 44 get a 60 and run the 14bolt

Or just make up your mind on what you want to do with your truck.

I hear a lot of people complain about death wobbles and other issues about modifying your truck. So if that doesn't scare you into not sas'ing your ride, The next question comes into play, why do you want to sas your ride?

Doing the work to mine was one of the best things i have done as far as im concerned. I just wish i had another vehicle to daily drive because, once you straight axle your ride your going to want to wheel it harder, which means a higher chance of breaking, IMO..

I would not run a 14 bolt for 33's for wheeling, you will not enjoy the little clearance you have.

And most people when they sas they run larger than 33's.. I personally don't see the point in going through the work to straight axle it to only run 33's. YOu can do that on ifs.

If i was running one ton axles like a 14 bolt and a dana 60 i wouldn't run anything smaller than a 40" tire.

I want to get a SAS done. I can run bigger tires which is no problem. I guess 35's or 37's. And I would guess by what you guys say 5.29 gears with lockers would be good?

edit: another consideration: is the D44 pumpkin in the correct place--the passenger side? can't remember on chevy's...my tahoe is ifs..

Getting the axles is only a small part of the battle.

Matt16--Yeah I know. At least my brother-in-law is welder.
ocdropzone-- it will be both. I will be getting a new truck soon and that is when the transformation will take place. It is going to be hard I will tell you that. I do believe the pumpkin on the 44 is the passenger side.

Get them, and run the 44 up front, gear's are cheaper, as well as easier to find parts, and you don't hve to worry about birfields, I plan on running another 44, that's what I had on my 86 Runner when I built it

its a HD 44 right? 8 lug? 16 inch rims? take all that into consideration. i'd run it cause it's free but it would take a lot of money to get it right- I'd start with military hummer double beadlock wheels because of their massive backspacing no need to shorten the axles then but u still may need small fender flares for the road.- high steer kit (special inset to clear the hummer rims) gearing- 5.33's arb rear, welded front and u got a decent combo but i'd swap that front 44 for a d-60 later on.
