I have a 1986 toyota 4WD pickup. When i have my front hubs locked in (even in 2WD) they make a rattling noise, what is this? are they locking in? and, once in a great while, a nasty howling almost a deep bassy screach, can be heard and felt in your feet and a$$, this is only once in a great while. (with hubs locked in) anybody been there? Thanks, Josh.

SPINDLE BUSHINGS! The deep screetch will only do it for about 10-15 seconds and then stop right. And you can feel it in the floorboard right? I just went through this. The noise you here is the bushing spinning on the axle shaft. I had the loud noise about 5 times for about 10 seconds each time and it was totally sporadic when it would do it. It ruined my axle shaft on the one side where the bushing spun around it. When your not hearing the loud noise the rattling you are hearing is the CV axle rattling in the back of the spindle. Grab your axle and see if there is any play at all right where it goes through the backside of the spindle...like behind your rotor area. Chances you have play there and could duplicate the noise by banging on your CV a few times with a rubber hammer. Read this for more info
