the shackles (if they are stock toyota one) are two piece units. The bolts are attached to the outside shackle plates, and the other side is held on with the nuts

Not to hijack this thread... but any good suggestions for loosening the bolt at the front of the leaf? my attempts are turning into one trip after another to Sears to swap out split sockets! That bolt is not going anywhere.

Cut it off??!!
it just doesn't come out?
If I cut it off, then I'll have to get a new bolt?
Also, I don't have the 2 bolts that hold the big bolt in. Mine just has one large 19mm bolt and a nut on the backside

I guess what I'm saying is, why doesn't it come off? the head of the bolt isn't tack welded in place. My weak point is the sockets, they just split down the side! I could have a 20 ft breaker bar and it wouldn't do me any good... are they just so tight that they require a impact socket with a big bar on it?

Well..
When i did em on my 81, which, mind you, is alot older than your truck.
I put a 3FT breaker bar on a 1/2in drive ratchet/socket
And it still didnt move.
I soaked it in PB blaster, and 15 minutes later it finally broke loose

get a fire wrench on it. heat it up, it should come out then. and as Teuf said, what's a new bolt going to cost? $5? also, an impact socket would serve well as opposed to the ones you continue to break.

Yoterr i'd check and see if theres the two bolts that have a plate that hold the bolt on.
I think my truck has those, and i know for a fact that my 81 did, too.
