i guess for me it is. i do the usual check and one of them is bad. this time the third check according to the FSM. it runs fine. a minor miss that comes and goes, and still gets 20mpg in town.

You've seriously got an issue if you only get 4/5 yrs out of a brand new OEM tps. I still have the original one on my '86 @ 217k/mi.

What your issue is I couldn't tell you, unless...maybe....you have bad grounding in your electrical system. But, I would think you'd notice that in other areas. Your not getting solvents and other crap on it are you?

Under normal circumstances? Time and use. It's electrical and has a charge through it. Like any computer component, over time the materials that conduct the charge and relay info just eventually break down.

The one on my 88 didn't work for several years. I recently removed it and fixed it. Just a few drops of 3-in-one oil past the spring down the shaft unstuck the thing. Now it works like brand new.

What I'm trying to say is maybe yours were like mine and just a little dirty/sticking. Did you examine/test and replace them yourself? Or did you have the unfortunate experience of having the stealership rob ya for that too?

1st time stealership did it. 450 bucks to diagnose and replace TPS. that was the last time, nope, next to the last time. i was in colorado one time when rear diff. gave up the ghost. that one cost me 2400 bucks to rebuild but not regear the rearend. it sucks to break down out of town, but when your out of town who else do you trust.
