Depends on your area and quality of the shop. Call several places in your area they should be able to give you a ballpark estimate.

cheap paint jobs typically don't last. paint jobs can be anywhere from $100-10,000. painting ultimately comes down to the quality of the prep work before painting (prep work is mostly all labor cost), then the quality of the actual paint/number of coats/clear coating etc, and lastly how you care for it afterward. it's totally possible to have a cheap paint job last if you prepped it well and took good care of it afterwards.

if you have chips and scratches, the prep will likely cost significantly more if you plan to have these "blended" in or the panels brought down to metal. also, if you have decals that need to be removed it's another thing to consider. also think about the paint hidden behind things like trim/rubber, lights, mirrors, engine bay, door jambs, etc. etc.

Yep, quality paint job could cost more than what we paid for the trucks. That's why for my fiberglas shell (86 4Runner), I'm simply sanding down well and will take it to decent shop for primer and paint. I'm doing touch ups of road/wind rash, but my I do not have proper facility nor room to do a job as big s a camper shell.

Red face

How many spray cans do you need to paint a truck??

I tried a roller but that did not turn out so well about as good as using a brush..

But it was better then the red rust color.

I've been reading about the roll on Rustoleum method. I'm thinking about trying it on my '91 Runner. The paint is so bad I don't see how it could hurt. When I wash it the water turns red...rub your hand over it when dry and your hand turns red! Someone at some point absolutely killed the paint with polishing compound. There is still dried up compound splatter inside the door jambs. All the edges are showing primer or even bare metal and there is a large spot on the hood that is showing primer thru the paint also.

I figure I can fix the rust spots over the windows, roll some paint over it and it will be better than it is now. At least it will slow down the rust on the bare metal spots where some PO polished all the paint off. Not like I'm trying for a show car paint job.

Sounds like you have severe oxidation. If you want to breath some new life into the paint you could use a heavy cutting compound and gradually move to a polishing compound.

At that point you will be down to what good paint you have.

Then use a coat of glaze and then a couple coats of good synthetic wax and it will look about as good as it will look with whats on there.

Of course you will have to keep it waxed every couple of months to prevent to paint from getting oxidized again.

But it really depends on your budget. It sounds like your truck needs a significant amount of prep work.

My 87 4Runner was a basket case when I started. I bought it in 99 as a winter beater for $300 as it had a blown 22RE and holes in the quarter panels big enough to put your arm through.

It sat until 2012 when I started putting it back together. I did most of the big body work myself. I put new quarter panels and fenders on it and sourced a tailgate in descent shape.

The body guy had to fix small ding in the tailgate, make a small patch panel for the drivers door, repair some rust through on the A-pillars, and do all the other basic prep work. It was sprayed the same color (black). Overall it cost me $3k for the paint and body work. I'd guess $1k of that was the actual paint.

This was with a guy with a small shop that did this on the side and took 4 months to do it. I imagine if I dropped it off at a big place and wanted it back in a couple weeks it would have cost closer to $5k.

But I live in MA where everything is expensive.

I just want a paint job to look decent for 4-5 years til I get another truck the truck does have some other surface rust on top of the windshield on the bumper and balance their is 3 holes In the bed panels 2 where the tailpipe comes out on both sides and one over the quarter panel I'm not so worried about the bumper I know I can replace that for 100$ or so I just want the rest of the truck decent I don't want it to be a show truck just somethin decent lookin
